Medical Marijuana a Cash Crop for Newspaper Ads

In Colorado, California and Montana, where medical marijuana is legal, newspapers are enjoying increased ad revenue for this emerging market. This is most valuable at a time when newspapers are hurting for advertising, particularly classified ads, which have plummeted with the rise of online services like Craigslist.

Crazy Man Leads Opposition to Marijuana Legalization in California, Part II

Bishop Ron Allen is seriously one of the best things to ever happen to the marijuana legalization debate. In all my years of marijuana reform advocacy, I've never seen an opponent so unhinged, so incoherent and intoxicated by his own idiocy. Just watch this FOX News debate with MPP's Steve Fox and see if you can figure out what the hell Bishop Allen is trying to say:

English Soccer and Cricket Unions Want to Stop Recreational Drug Testing

The player unions representing soccer players and cricketers in England have called for recreational drugs to be removed from the World Anti-Doping Agency's prohibited list. "For the number of players who have tested positive for cocaine, the consequences are far from performance-enhancing and the outcomes in the majority of cases have been very negative," said John Bramhall, deputy chief executive of the Professional Footballers' Association. Ian Smith, the Professional Cricketers' Association's legal director, agreed that recreational drug use isn't usually about gaining an unfair advantage, saying "Marijuana is not a big issue with cheating in sport -- let's get it off the (WADA) list."

Marijuana: the Victimless Crime That Costs New York State $15 Billion a Year (Opinion)

Kristin Davis opines that there is one fact that Americans, and New Yorkers, must face (as it slaps us in the face): Prohibition hasn’t stopped the use and domestic production of marijuana. Marijuana is currently used by over 25 million Americans annually and cannabis is the largest cash crop in the United States. In fact, the only thing prohibition has done for the people of New York is cost them a huge amount of money — somewhere in the ballpark of $10-15 billion a year.

You're Invited

Dear friends:

I hope you'll join us for this special private fundraiser at a breathtaking and peculiar Sonoma wine country estate.

While the cause, the people assembled, and the location itself are enough to make for a memorable time, we are not stopping there...

Your senses will be delighted by unique cuisine delivered in dramatic ways, two gravity-defying aerial performances from the cathedral ceiling in the living room, and the chance to mingle amongst the cannabis glitterati at the sponsor-provided lounge and bar.

NOTE:  Tickets are limited and will likely sell out.  Feel free to forward this to friends that you'd like to introduce to MPP, but please do not post this to any public lists.

http://themission.mpp.org/

This fall, our movement is at a pivotal moment in history.  Legal medical marijuana and marijuana-related products continue to be growth industries, the media can’t get enough of us, and California will set the pace for rest of the nation on its course toward the re-legalization of cannabis.  No matter what happens at the polls on November 2nd, we have a tremendous opportunity – and responsibility – to unite, share our vision for what lies ahead, charge forth stronger than ever.

By purchasing a ticket(s) to The Mission: Winter Ball, you are taking part in the fight for freedom, justice, and compassion.  We look forward to celebrating with you on December 11th.

Help Prop. 19 by Midnight Tonight

We Are Drug Policy Action.

Help pass California's Prop 19 on November 2.

Donate

Make a Contribution to the Yes on 19 campaign

Dear friends,

It’s time to end marijuana prohibition -- and that starts with passing California’s Proposition 19 on November 2.

Prop 19 cuts to the core of what the Drug Policy Alliance is about: Putting an end to a national drug policy that’s grounded in fear and prejudice. That's why I'm doing everything I can to pass Prop 19 -- and if you join me, right now, we can do it.

Contribute $15 or more to the Yes on 19 campaign before midnight tonight, and they'll send you a limited edition "End Marijuana Prohibition" bumper sticker. Contribute $50, and they'll send you a t-shirt.

Marijuana is not a trivial part of the war on drugs. Far from it: Police make more arrests for cannabis than for all other illicit drugs combined. And our prohibition laws are shown to disproportionately affect people of color.

It's not often that I ask you to give money to another organization, but Prop 19 is so important that I'm asking you to step up and help pass it, right now.

Please join me in making a contribution of $15 or more -- and get back a sticker that shows you’re ready to help end marijuana prohibition.

What's more, if you give now, all proceeds will go toward the Yes on 19 campaign’s critical $75,000 end-of-quarter fundraising goal. Midnight tonight marks an important deadline for the Yes on 19 campaign to report their finances, and we can ensure that the press and the pundits see that fundraising report as a powerful sign of the Prop 19 campaign's strength and momentum.

By making a generous contribution before midnight, you can show the skeptics that we’ve got the strength to win on November 2. I hope you’ll stand with me by chipping in $15 or more to the Yes on 19 campaign before midnight.

Sincerely,

Ethan Nadelmann
Executive Director

Why California Decriminalized Recreational Pot: 5 Theories (Opinion)

Getting busted for having an ounce or less of marijuana in California is no longer that big a deal, or even a crime, under a new law signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Instead of facing a misdemeanor charge, people caught will a small amount of marijuana will now get, at most, a $100 fine. With everything else on his plate — a big budget deal, a landmark health insurance exchange — what might have motivated Schwarzenegger to decriminalize marijuana now?

Prop 19 polls on the rise

Newsletter V1_I9 PollsIn just the last week two new polls have come out showing California's Prop 19 has strengthened its position among that state's voters. In one instance, the highly respected Field Poll showed Prop 19 leading 49 to 42 percent, a marked increase from June when that same poll showed the initiative down 48 to 44 percent. Let's hope these polls hold true come November and California voters decide to make their state the first in the nation to end marijuana prohibition!  Read more...

Ending prohibition makes cents (and dollars)

Newsletter V1_I9 MoneyA new study funded by the Cato Institute and conducted by former MPP grant recipient Jeffrey A. Miron shows that between savings and tax revenue the regulation of marijuana could bring $17.4 billion to government coffers annually. Although Miron's report notes that much of the savings would come from reducing the number of people in the criminal justice system it is nonetheless an affirmation of what MPP has been saying for years: ending marijuana prohibition saves lives AND dollars. A Judicial Indictment of the War on Drugs featuring Judge Jim Gray

Come hear Jim Gray, former Superior Court Judge of Orange County, CA, talk about why the "war on drugs" has failed, and what you can do about it.

James P. Gray was a trial judge in Orange County, California beginning in 1983. Before becoming a judge, he served as a Volunteer in the Peace Corps in Costa Rica, a staff judge advocate and criminal defense attorney in the Navy JAG Corps, a federal prosecutor in Los Angeles, and a civil litigation attorney in a private law firm, in addition to being a Republican candidate for US Congress in 1998, and a Libertarian candidate for US Senate in 2004. Judge Gray has discussed issues of drug policy on more than two hundred television and radio shows and public forums all across the country. Using his experience on the bench and elsewhere, he has also authored a book on the failed War on Drugs, another Wearing The Robe, about practical and ethical issues in being a judge.
