Policemen are our friends?
Reminds me of a line in Tom Paxton's song "What did you learn in school today?".
I learned that policemen are our friends
I learned that justice never ends
I learned that murderers die for their crimes
even if we make a mistake sometimes.

Tried to grab his gun ?

Can you read "Big Al"???
The article CLEARLY says NYPD.
What I find VERY disturbing is that two "helpful citizens" helped kill this man who was most likely medicating for pain. I can't imagine why a college employee would smoke in a rest room otherwise.
NYPD is running amok, beating people, using pepper spray, and just being bullies in general. The Staten Island cops that I've known were just happy drunks. Now, murderers. I doubt that man was reaching for the gun, more likely the cop (the coward cop) made that claim to cover obvious brutality.

I don't think it's fair to
I don't think it's fair to hate the cop on this one. If this was any other criminal we'd all be happy that he was behind bars. Let's not forget that he did put the officer's life in danger by reaching for the weapon. I think it's a damn shame that he died, but this wasn't because of the cop's actions. Try not to blame the wrong people.
