Mexico, Just Say No to America's Prohibitionist War on Drugs (Opinion)

Gwynne Dyer, an independent journalist based in London, opines on the state of Mexico's drug prohibition war against the backdrop of a remarkable event that occurred in Mexico last week. Tens of thousands of Mexicans gathered in the main squares of cities across the country to demand an end to the "war on drugs". In the Zocalo, in the heart of Mexico City, they chanted "no more blood" and many called for the resignation of President Felipe Calderon, who began the war by using the army against the drug trafficking organizations in late 2006. Absolutely

I read the original article which bemoaned the fact that this was the front page article in every Mexican paper and yet appeared no where else on the planet. The Mexican people demanded the army be put back in their barracks and remain there until one of their original roles came to play, those being defence of Mexico's borders and emergencies where they are needed. No blood was the theme of the day.A country in which over 35,000 people have died, many of them officials and police. One can only hope that Mexico will legalise all drugs as they tried to do on two occasions already.Only the United States, and only a minority there want this foolishness to continue. They do have support from Canada's current evangelical government and Australia and New Zealand have no qualms about jailing their aboriginal populations, who are paying at a 5-1 ratio over the far more drug consuming whites.Sound familiar?

What a legacy

What a legacy Felipe Calderon will have to carry around for the rest of his life. He can say all he wants, that the 37,000 lives that have been lost since he drug Mexico into this war are cartel members, but we all know that's a lie. Being Americas lap dog has brought pain and suffering to the Mexican people on an almost Biblical scale. 116 bodies found in unmarked graves along our border, and hardly anyone on either side of the border really seems to notice. No one seems to care. Why does Calderon continue to wage this senseless War, when all he has to do is take a positive approach. (That is one that the US would soundly condemn.) Legalize and tax. How many more people must bleed and die.

Good on the NZ Herald...

I'm surprised that the NZ Herald published this piece, as they seem to be the self-righteous media vanguard of NZ's own War on Drugs, specifically cannabis and meth.
