Middlebury, Vermont, this week declared a public health emergency to prevent a local business from selling it. It's already illegal in five states -- Louisiana, Missouri, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Delaware -- and a number of towns and cities across the country, and now politicians in at least seven other states have filed bills to make it illegal there. For the DEA, it is a "drug of concern."

As law enforcement and politicians stumble across it and the phenomenon of its recreational use, they are reacting in the classic fashion with moves to outlaw it. In Delaware, grieving parents of a teenager who committed suicide after using salvia managed to push a bill through the legislature. In Ohio, police who stumbled across it while investigating counterfeit goods raised the alarm, even though they had never had any problem with it. The cops responded predictably. "It's something we feel should be outlawed," Lorain County Drug Task Force Capt. Dennis Cavanaugh told the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
But researchers say the while salvia's effects on consciousness may be disquieting, the plant has not been shown to be toxic to humans, that its effects are so potent is unlikely to be used repeatedly, and its active property, salvinorin A, could assist in the development of medicines for mood disorders. While action at the state level would unlikely affect research, a move by the DEA to put it on the controlled substances list could.
Salvia is a popular item at the Urban Shaman Ethnobotanicals in downtown Vancouver, and media attention only spurs sales, according to proprietor Chris Bennett. "We're selling about 50 grams of the 10x every couple of weeks," he told Drug War Chronicle. "It's mainly young people -- although we don't sell to anyone under 18 -- but it's not limited to them. Whenever I get quoted in the media about salvia, I get a slew of new middle-aged customers who want to try it."
Once or twice is usually enough, said Bennett. "It's very powerful -- you can forget you even smoked it -- very intense, and the onset is very rapid," he explained. "There is also a lot of variation from person to person. Four people can be sitting in a room taking it, and one would be laughing, one would be afraid the world was ending, one would feel like he was two-dimensional, and one would say that everything seems to be made out of Legos. I hear a lot of people say that one."
Like many other purveyors of salvia, Urban Shaman provides an information sheet with each purchase. "We tell people they should have a sitter. If you're on salvia and end up on the balcony, you might think you can get downstairs by jumping," said Bennett. "You want to have someone there with you; it's irresponsible to use it by yourself," he said. "We also recommend a quiet environment. The experience can be influenced by background noise, which can be distorted or misinterpreted. Setting is important."
There are hazards to messing with hallucinogens, one expert was quick to point out. "It's an hallucinogen and while its hallucinogenic actions are different from those induced by LSD and other hallucinogens, it has the liabilities that hallucinogens do," said Bryan Roth, a professor of pharmacology at University of North Carolina's School of Medicine, the man who isolated salvinorin A. "When people take it, they are disoriented. If you don't know where you are and you're driving a car, that would be a bad experience."
Still, said Roth, while it may make you freak out, it isn't going to kill you. "There is no evidence of any overt toxicity, there are no reports in the medical literature that anyone has died from it. The caveat is that there have been no formal studies done on humans, but the animal data suggests that it doesn't kill animals given massive doses, and that's usually -- but not always -- predictive for human pharmacology."
"I'm unaware of any studies suggesting that salvia is toxic," said Thomas Prisinzano, assistant professor of medicinal and natural products chemistry at the University of Iowa. "Unlike other hallucinogens, it acts by stimulating opioid receptors, and basically produces an hallucinogenic experience that peaks in less than 15 minutes. It produces a subpopulation that finds it very unpleasant and never wants to do it again."
Nor, because of its intense effects, are you likely to get strung out on it. "There doesn't appear to be much potential for dependence or addiction, although no one has investigated this in any detail," Roth said. "The typical person I talked to didn't like the experience; it is too intense for someone looking for a mini-LSD-like experience. It's very rapid in onset and very intense, so it's not normally considered a party drug."
Even Bennett, whose clientele could be expected to contain some serious psychedelic adventurers, confirmed that it is not a drug that most people come back to again and again. "Even those who are interested in it don't use it very often, maybe once a week to explore head space, but those salvianauts are few and far between," he reported. "Most people try it once or twice and have no desire to try it again. It is the ones who use it with a purpose or for a spiritual quest or vision that seem to find it most useful," he said.
"There is a subpopulation using it for spiritual rather than recreational purposes," agreed Roth. "That seems to be the cohort that is using it more than once or twice."
While the DEA did not return Chronicle calls for comment on the current status of salvia, it has moved slowly. It has classified the plant as a "drug of concern" for several years now, but has yet to act to place it under the Controlled Substances Act. The plant's limited potential dependence could be one reason. Another could be that it is still relatively rare and unlikely to ever develop into a drug with a mass following.
That's fine with the scientists, who could see regulating salvia, but not prohibiting it. "The distribution of salvia should be regulated," Roth said. "We regulate nicotine and alcohol, and the effects of those compounds on human consciousness and perception is quite modest compared with salvia. That this is available over the Internet to young children is a bit irresponsible. They could engage in some dangerous behavior while taking it. We don't sell alcohol over the Internet."
But while Roth called for salvia to be regulated, he didn't want to see it added to the list of drugs proscribed by the Controlled Substances Act. "I'm against making it a Schedule I compound," he said. "Once you schedule something, it makes scientific research more difficult, and there is considerable potential for derivatives of the active ingredient to have great medical utility. Scheduling it makes it more difficult for those of us trying to relieve human suffering."
If salvia were prohibited, his work would suffer, said Prisinzano. "This would hurt clinical researchers more than me, and there is an effort underway to do clinical trials on humans before a review board now," he said. "But it would make it more difficult for me to get leaves. Right now we get them from head shops on the Internet."
Perhaps legislators in states like Iowa, Illinois, New Jersey, Oregon, and Texas, where prohibition bills are on the table, should calmly reassess the scope of the salvia menace and place such legislation on the back burner where it belongs. Or replace them with reasonable regulatory measures. But that's probably asking too much.

Salvia is the "RED PILL" that the powers that be do not want you to have. Increased PERCEPTION means less fooling of the public...oh not that! Where are the weapons of mass destruction? I think you get the picture.
Just like the public campaign against Ephedrine which was used for thousands of years in other countries, a GOVERNOR of a state publicly banned this. OH yeah, it also increased an individuals PERCEPTION. All of the drugs that are addictive and decreases perception are legal. I think you can see what is going on here.
Absolutely Ridiculous
I am a person who has tried Salvia a few times and know many who have also tried it. I spend my time with many users of Marijuana, Extacy, and Magic Mushrooms. Not one of anyone I have ever heard of has ever overused Salvia. Salvia is a mediative and can broaden your perceptions of the way you think, good trip or bad trip. It is definitely a non-addicting substance and the experience is nothing close to LSD nor as dangerous due to the short time span of its effects.
I have never in my life heard of a person ever thinking about driving their car on Salvia, Salvia is not a party drug and is not fun when around many other people. Most people at least hear of some knowledge before trying a substance. Give people some credit, the day we have many accidents due to people under the influence of Salvia is the same day our world is corrupt with idiocy. People simply are not that stupid.
Another point to make is that anyone I have ever personally witnessed or heard of under the influence of Salvia does not ever even want to move around much. Jumping off of a balcony is just plain ridiculous. The fact that it gives of extremely potent psychoactive effects is very true, although if there is no true evidence of any harmful effects then making Salvia illegal is simply taking away our god given rights. Cookies have more evidence of having harmful effects, Salvia tastes disgusting while cookies are delicious. If people do not usually want to take Salvia again why make it illegal? It makes more sense to make cookies illegal because of their evidence on harmful effects and also the fact that people always want to eat another after the first delicious experience of a cookie. Because of the fact that we can eat cookies it is our God given right to be able to ingest anything we wish to and put it in our system.

All this hype over Salvia, which is actually quite weak in comparison to many other legal herbs. Its main pschoactive constituent, Salvinorin A, is a disociative halluicinogen, similar to PCP, Ketamine, Ibogaine, Nitrous Oxide, or the completely legal OTC drug Dextromethorphan. However, the amount of Salvnorin A in Salvia leaves is so low that it usually has to be highly concentrated into extract forms to be effective. What is not being said though is that the Coleus plant contains very similar constituents, and although is considerable less potent, its also not currently extracted and concentrated as Salvia is (yet). Moreover, its far less expensive, extremely common, and available at many retailers such as Wal-Mart, Home Depot, and nurseries throughout the nation.
Live and Let Live
I'm not sure I'm into all that political stuff mentioned above, but I can tell you I smoke marijuanna and it is like a very peaceful, soothing, possibly better than salvia d., (never had it) meditative state. Just an all over feel good. Can make anger, depression, and confusion rush off. No thoughts of killing off millions of people, or oneself, or of pushing yourself to the limits. If the love and respect that marijuanna has earned by those who know the truth behind these God given plants can be given to salvia d. too, then go for it guys. Just tell the people the truth about it, and don't talk about how you got so messed up on something that you went off and did something stupid. Instead, the next time you smoke your plant show it respect. Treat it like it is a privelage to be in your position and don't over-do it. Come together and don't shout at the blind, simply tell them how things really are....how much worse some of the still legal things are for you. (they can't ban everything, it'd be chaos) I lost my plant before I was even born, but I tell you it's earned my respect.

I was so depressed that I was planning to kill myself, but that same day a friend offered me some Salvia Divinorum. So, thinking that it would change anything, I smoked it in a mersham pipe. I then sat there in a dimly lit room for thirty minutes and it seem that all my thoughts of self distruction rapidly broke down and became silly meaningless little nothings. I felt like (as well as visualized) all the chaos and negativity in my life was put into a contantly rotating sphere inside my head and then the ball was torn apart and the pieces cast completly out my head where I could invetsigate them and come to a neutral understanding with them.

Salvia vs. LSD
Salvia Divinorum is proved to be alot less dangerous than LSD. Salvia has no long term side effects. It's not toxic in any way. Salvia is also non addictive. The effects only last for 20 minutes at the most unlike LSD which can last up to a couple days. Salvia isn't a problem because people are smarter to smoke Salvia while not driving because the physcoactive effects will send you into a totally different dimension. Most commonly people do it in the comfort of their own homes on a couch. And commenting about the kid who killed hiself. They only guess it's because of Salvia just because he did it after smoking it. There is no proof that is was Salvia that caused his suicide. Salvia has been proven to lighten the mood of users after their experience to make them happier and realize life in a whole new perspective. It also has been proven that Salvia is the best substance to cure depression and anxiety. I'm guessing this kid killed himself over personal issues not Salvia. So all in all Salvia is much different than acid. And Salvia is also much safer. So think and do some reasarch before you go pointing fingers.
People need to realize
while I understand that many of you use this crazy drug, though there are no long term effects that are found YET, I believe that anything that is used often that alters your mental state and or brain can be potentially dangerous in the long run. So user be responsible and realize that being able to change perception, memory, thought processing and all the other side of effects of salvia are not NORMAL and this type of drug can have potentially serious side effect.

The guvment banned Salvia in
The guvment banned Salvia in Delaware because some kid commited suicide and he smoked salvia. However, they fail to mention he was on Acutane, which can and has caused depression and suicide. So instead of blaming the Suicide on poor old innocent Salvia, maybe the good old reliable guvment should look at the facts and realize it was the legal drug Acutane that killed him.

Having never used any illegal drug in my life and hearing that it might become illegal I tried Salvia. I researched it and decided that it did sound like the one drug that I would try. I tried it because I had bounced between being an Atheist and a Christian most of my life and I was smack in the middle of hard core Atheism when I decided it was time to try an experiment on reality by probing the mind. Well the result were beyond anything I could have expected but all wonderful and positive. It only lasted 3 minutes but the lessons would take a life time to share. I will never doubt the existence of my creator again. It instantly removed the source of depression that I often sank into and I have never returned to that dark place again. Not only that it made me appreciate my family and my wife more than I ever did before. I stopped worrying about the future and I realized that I was the leading edge of hundreds of generations of people who came before me and who were cheering me on to live my life to the fullest and not take any moment for granted. This is a wonderful world to live in.
As far as the claim that the boy committed suicide after trying Salvia I can't believe it. That is either a fabrication or was a serious accident. I am a hard working father or two with a wife and a house, and a business and not some burned out lazy yahoo and I will fight legally for the the right to smoke Salvia as much as I would fight to continue going to Church if it became outlawed. Just because I now know it does reveal truth unlike anything else can do. You will immediately understand many difficult concepts in th Bible after trying Salvia. Its would be a tremendous travesty to humanity to outlaw it.

Must be respected, very intense
The feeling this gives you even though a very short stint,(10-15 minutes) definatively makes you feel not at ease. Although you must understand that this is used by shaman who are very spirtual, I myself am a two pack a day smoker and recently gave up pot for the reason of passing a drug test. Now i enjoy smoking pot and cigarettes very much, nothing can prepare you for it. i purchased a 5x extract and felt kind of jipped for 25 bucks. Then i took it home put it in the pipe...30 seconds later the intesity increased nothing like i have felt before. Ive done pot, coke, acid, shrooms, extasy. I go ahead start to play some warcraft BOOM, the back of my head feels heavy reality distorted almost drunk but not quite, this most certainly is not pot which is the only drug i useand enjoy very much after a stressful day at work or for pure enjoyment on the weekend....tryed this as an alternative....puts you in check, quick. this needs to be used by yourself after doing some DEEP meditation laying in bed dim lights, because this is the most intense feeling ever. I would like to think that this should be used to open your mind, because doing anything physical is nearly impossible. the back of my head felt so heavy coordination completely off. Do not walk around it will cause a bad trip. lay in bed have some candles going, be completely at ease, maybe have some very low frequncy sound going im talking theta waves between 3 1/2 and 7 1/2 hz. If you do this, i could see how this can put you in a state you have never been in and open gates in your mind open a bigger picture. Please do some reading on meditation close your eyes walk down 21 steps open a door, i like to envision a room i go in surrounded by clouds. this is your room you can do anything you wish. Salvia Divinorum
Once again we have a campaign to prohibit a plant based upon lies. The prohibitionists act like Salvia Divinorum is a new drug and they have to act quickly to avoid tragedy and prevent the destruction of many lives. THe truth is that Salvia has been known and used in the United States since 1963 when Gordon Wasson ran across it in Mexico and wrote numerous articles and books about it. The reason they think it is new is they have just heard about it. The reason they have just heard about is that it has never caused any problems. So why the big fuss? The prohibition of Salvia Divinorum is one more click in the wratchet putting us all under police state control.
Try chewing first
What i would like to recommend to anyone interested in using salvia is to first try chewing the leaves that contain no additional salvinorin. Yes the leaves are bitter, (and needs to be held in your mouth for some time, because salvinorin breaks down in your stomach, and needs to be absorbed sublingually) but the bitterness is nothing compared to an experience of too much of this drug.
High doses and low doses of sal are 2 different worlds and i've read too many horror stories of people who tried the concentrated, smoking route first; and then not experimenting with the lower dose, which may have been their preference.
I think what prohibition will do is greatly decrease the amount of people who will try this route first, since the cost will go up and that you need a greater supply of leaves. And that less people will be growing their own. I keep thinking of what a difference it would make if coca was decriminalized. Allow the leaves to be available for trade. But oh, so many thugs would lose their source of income.
I use salvia around once a week because i found it helps with my Tourette's and OCD. For me, it relieves alot of the tension and anxiety that builds from my habit of suppressing my tics, and reduces them a bit. And also helps me to think more creatively.

I've been researching the effects and general information on divinorium for some time, and am hopefully going to be able to experience it quite soon. Wether or not the plant became illegal, it would not deter me from trying it. This country seems to run on the belief that making something illegal will stop it from happening. Obviously, as we've seen with other plants, such as marijuana, people do not work like this. The control our sad excuse of a government puts on us is only external. If somebody wants to do something bad enough they will. The scary part is how little research is put into these things before they're outlawed. You constantly see ads all over on how cigarettes kill more people than cancer and heart disease and other things combined, yet they don't make this illegal. Yet harmless pot, or salvia is put under the spotlight because a few morons want to misuse them? People (the government more specifically) show their stupidity a little bit too well. People in general are not stupid and can see through the littered lies of the war on drugs. Things that cause death or debilitate lives such as heroin and coke and meth, yes they should be scheduled. But leave the people and their personal experiences with nonharmful "drugs" alone. What ever happened to freedom?!

I think I'll add: of course http://www.sagewisdom.org needs to be mentioned as a (probably the best) site to go to for the facts and FAQs about Salvia divinorum. If everyone who planned to use it first read (and followed) The User's Guide http://www.sagewisdom.org/usersguide.html there would be no problem. It doesn't lend itself to abuse and can possibly end cravings and addictions to other substances that are detrimental to body and mind. Salvia is safe done wisely. Lying down or sitting up, however you can handle it (5-10 minutes smoked, 30-60minutes chewed leaves or tincture), darkness and quiet is best with slow. deep. relaxed breathing.

OH! suddenly there is a herb that will KILL, lets ignore ALL the scientific evidence that labels this as a miracle drug that could save people from drug addiction, that has no harmful effects, yeah, lets ignore all that, and say it will KILL YOU! Isn't it funny how alcohol and cigarets seem to be forgotten as terrible drugs killing, maiming and destroying whole families? Isn't it strange that these companies are supporting salvia being made illegal? capping the competition. The government makes me sick, hear the world drug and ban it, despite all the evidence and proof naming it the most lovely drug known to man! why not ban paracetamol? its a drug? it kills people? it alters how your body feels? people get addicted? Just because people ENJOY it, doesnt mean it should be illegal!
