Donna Cockrel, the Shelby
County, KY, teacher fired after inviting Woody Harrelson to her class to
discuss hemp in 1996, will receive $70,000 from the Shelby County School
District to settle the lawsuit she filed after her firing. Harrelson's
visit to the fifth-grade class at Simpsonville Elementary School, where
he talked about legalizing hemp production in the US, ignited a local firestorm.
Cockrel was fired months later.
The school board gave 17
reasons, including "insubordination," but as a trial date in US District
Court drew near in Frankfort last week, the school board settled.
Cockrel will enjoy her nice little bundle in Detroit, where she currently
teaches.
