Dear Media, Please Ask Obama to Explain His Escalating War on Medical Marijuana

http://stopthedrugwar.com/files/Oaksterdam.jpg
Monday morning's DEA raid of Oaksterdam University is making major headlines, but there's one detail missing from the coverage: why the f#$k is Obama at War with Medical Marijuana in the first place? Seriously, why is any of this even happening at all?

Under this administration, the idea of raiding state-approved medical marijuana facilities went from being "not a good use of our resources," to being a very popular pastime among federal police and prosecutors. They've been going completely berserk for the better part of a year now, and while they weren't exactly diplomatic before that, they've been acting lately like they won some kind of drug war lottery and are trying to spend all the money before they die.

Raiding Richard Lee is arguably the most audacious play the feds have ever made in the War on Medical Marijuana for a few reasons. He's in a wheelchair and exemplifies the image of a legitimate medical marijuana patient/provider. He runs a school that promotes professionalism in the medical cannabis industry. And most importantly, he was the driving force behind the Prop 19 campaign that nearly legalized marijuana in California.

If you're thinking all of this explains exactly why they want to take him out, well…yeah, but it isn't nearly that simple. Everyone knows who Richard Lee is, and almost everyone supports him. To go after him now, after everything he's done, is to manufacture the most perfect martyr ever to emerge in the increasingly ugly War on Medical Marijuana in America.

I could spend all afternoon speculating as to why the Obama Administration would choose to escalate a policy that's already so deeply unpopular with the American people. But I shouldn’t have to. It's Obama's turn to tell us what the hell happened here, and it's the responsibility of the press to demand an answer.

I think the reason this keeps

I think the reason this keeps happening is pretty obvious. Marijuana is still illegal at the federal level whether for medicine or recreation. So no matter how many memo's get written it won't make much of a difference until:

1- The supreme court rules that state law trumps federal law in this instance.

or

2- The federal laws change.

There isn't much Obama can do about that except write his own legislation. But why would he do that when Barney Frank and Ron Paul already wrote such legislation and it was basically ignored by congress? Until anything like the above happens law enforcement and federal prosecutors can always make the argument they are enforcing federal law. I am not sure if constitutionally a president can do much about it?

Of course Obama speaking out on the issue would be appropriate. But l don't expect much until after election. That doesn't mean people should just wait around until election. There is a lot to do. There are hundreds of congressman who need to be kicked out so we can actually have a functioning government that can do something about the drug war. There is a population to educate on why the drug war is wrong.

Obama

It's a mystery to me why Obama has been getting progressively more conservative in his policy regarding cannabis, but it certainly is not helping his popularity among those who voted for him.

As I tried to point out it

As I tried to point out it doesn't matter what Obama thinks about marijuana. He can't stop the drug war without a congress to support legislation to stop it. Or a supreme court case to rule in favor of states rights.

Is there some presidential power I am missing?

Sorry I don't mean to sound

Sorry I don't mean to sound rude but what I mean is can Obama really do much about this? Sure he could speak out more and if he did many people would respect him for it. But would it really change anything?

I don't know if its fair to say Obama is doing this when in reality its a giant beuracracy of endless law enforcement agencies and prosecutors that the president has little control over that is doing this.

This troll is likely on some

This troll is likely on some Obama payroll.  Obama is campaigning now on the discussion boards, blogs and other places of public comment.  Stop spreading your pro Obama propaganda.  Everybody knows the system is rigged.  Congress is rigged too.  Marijuana will never get a fair shake under these circumstances.  Who is the troll kidding?

Yes, You Are Missing Something

It's called the Controlled Substances Act.  It gives the power to schedule and reschedule controlled substances to the Attorney General (appointed, not elected), NOT Congress.  The AG is part of the executive branch, meaning he (in theory) answers to the president.  With a simple executive memo, the president could "encourage" the AG to reconsider marijuana as a schedule 1 substance.  Really, that's all it should take.

In reality, the AG has delegated the responsibility for scheduling controlled substances to the DEA.  In other words, not only are non-elected DEA officers making laws, they are also enforcing those very same laws.  So, no way the DEA will approve rescheduling marijuana as it would put them out of business.  Again though, a simple "suggestion" from the president could easily set things right, as the DEA are also part of the executive branch.

Thanks a lot Tony for the

Thanks a lot Tony for the information. Obviously I'm not a legal expert so I appreciate the information. I didn't realize the executive branch had so much say over this.

Richard Lee will no doubt go

Richard Lee will no doubt go down in history as one of the greatest cannabis heroes ever. So history will definitely treat Lee very well once society grows up about marijuana; but as for Obama/Holder and their clowns, history will show these people as oppressive tyrants. Right now marijuana consumers are being treated like the African American’s were treated prior to the 1960s-70s, or gay and lesbians were treated just 30 years ago. History will prove that the marijuana patient/consumer is normal and not sick and addicted. Marijuana people are no different than wine, ice cream, vitamin C, toaster or whatever for that matter consumer. History will show the FED violated basic human rights, even when citizens changed the law and tried to legally teach marijuana. What kind of nazi-like group would want to stop education in a so-called free country?

In my small opinion, the FED is gearing up for total war. These people see civil war and world war on the horizon. The marijuana patient/consumer will be an enemy combatant. The FED does not recognize the individual states; they want to Federalize everything uniformly according to the New World Order (or World Government established by elite Western banking interests). It is this NWO that is forcing prohibition ultimately. Probably because like NWO operative Hilliary Clinton said a little while back, “there is too much money in it.” Too much money for black projects, top secret missions and all the other scary things that the FED/NWO is doing with all the drug money they are making in places like Afghanistan, Mexico and elsewhere.

If you want to stop all this FED assault against marijuana, this is what you can peacefully do to stop these madmen:

1. Cancel any television cable or satellite service you many have. Stop supporting the mainstream media. Do not watch their news.
2. Go to places like Drudge and Infowars for news; and to learn about the other abuses, aside from marijuana, that are created by the FED/NWO juggernaut.
3. Become educated in all issues of this global oppression and war against ordinary citizens by the crazy elite. Use this knowledge to reach out to the people who are asleep; and teach the people about the truth. Teach people how they are getting Fucked everywhere: currency devaluation and higher prices for necessities, poisoned GMO foods, tainted vaccines, fluoride in the water supply, NDAA and other tyrannical legislation, environmental disaster cover-ps, Ron Paul “can’t win” PSY OPs, derivative scams and the abuses by banking and Wall Street. This list goes on and on.

YOU as an individual are a powerful force to spread truth throughout the internet on every format. You can wake people up to not only the marijuana prohibition scam, but something that touches everybody’s life.

This kind of typical paranoid

This kind of typical paranoid analysis is more conspiracy theory then fact. The drug war is wrong but spreading nonsense doesn't help. The truth helps. Not Alex Jones crazyness.

This creature is a troll.

This creature is a troll.  What it calls "nonsense" is actually common sense.  Hey creature, what specifically is "crazy" about any of the ideas posted above?  Any of this can be backed up with a simple google search with a little critical thinking attached.

Well I am not going to get

Well I am not going to get into an argument about being some kind of "Obama campaigner". Actually I'm a scientist who has a very strong interest in the drug war for both professional and personal reasons. I'm actually doing something but I don't expect someone who thinks Alex Jones has all the answers to understand any of it. I am going to cease this discussion for the sake of civility.

I never said Alex Jones has

I never said Alex Jones has all the answers.  Stop trying to smear Jones or me.  Do you actually think just because you are a scientist, you don't expect anyone who disagrees with you to not "....understand any of it" that you are saying?  Well sir, I'm a scientist too and I think that you have your head up your ass with regard to how things work in the real world.  Instead of insulting another scientist's commentary, by calling easily verifiable ideas "conspiracy theory," maybe you should try being a little more open minded, and a little less condescending.

Beware the wounded beast

The feds are freaking out, plain and simple. The only way they know how to deal with anything is with force that's their job, they are the police FORCE.

This is an election year and legalization might actually happen at the ballot box. These actions are aimed at people and organizations who might support those ballot initiatives.  They are using ''what ever means necessary to prevent the legalization of marijuana''. That's Gil's job description.  The dispensaries by their very existence prove that marijuana is harmless and could potentially provide funding for such efforts.  This all proves that this is all discrimination and a crime against humanity as it it results in the unnecessary suffering and premature deaths of many who would use marijuana as medicine.  The feds know that and they don't want to end up on trial for their crimes. Least of all they do not want to relinquish their power and massive budgets. Support ballot initiatives to legalize. War is Over! 2012! Legalize! Apologize! Compensate!

those DEA agents

anybody else just get pissed looking at those people?? its not enough for me to hope they believe in religion and therefore one day (PROBABLY WHEN THEY RETIRE - AS USUAL!) realize theyre going to the "bad" part of the afterworld cause of their line of work. They all reek of such an obscene abuse of power and lies and being picked on in school and never being cool their whole life and or never having any direction in life and being parented by clueless parents and thus fit the profile of a typical person going into law enforcement. I hope they die miserable, painful deaths - OF WHICH OF COURSE I WOULD NEVER HAVE ANY PERSONAL INVOLVEMENT IN (because, among other things, i have to spend all my time finding money to feed my HEROIN not marijuana but HEROIN, habit) - because they deserve to. And id love it if in those painful dying final hours they want, more than anything, more than their piece of garbage family and dumb wives or husbands (dumb imo for not having the guts to stand up and say, i love you but your job is wrong and i cannot love someone who thinks they have the rights that you think you have and thus quit your job or stay out of my world JUST LIKE THE DEA PERPETUATES ON THAT PIECE OF GARBAGE LYING ORGANIZATION ALCOHOLICS/NARCOTICS/COCAINE/ETC.ETC.ETC./ANONYMOUS - WHAT MAKES YOU THINK YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO DO THOSE DRUGS?! YOU GET OUT OF MY WORLD FOREVER UNTIL YOUR STRAIGHT! NO IFS ANDS OR BUTS ABOUT IT! IM NOT WRONG, AA/NA/ETC COULDNT POSSIBLY BE WRONG - YOURE THE DRUG USER YOUR WRONG! GET OUT OF MY WORLD!) being near them is some pain relief from that excruciating end... and then get a full on denial by the hospital/hospice/whatever sayin "WELL MR./MRS. DEA loser, we can't give you any pot or opiates for relief because you dont deserve it. Youve spent your life forcing excruciating pain, withdrawals and audacious authoritative moral b.s on people so no you get no relief and you die. you die in pain. you deserve it. and before i close the door and refuse to let anybody see you on your death bed i leave you to know that indeed the pain you feel now will get worse.. far worse before you die and indeed you will try to take your own life in the process but just know, no matter what happens here... where your going after your body dies is going to be far more painful than this... and that is for eternity. Nothing anybody can do about it then. No congress. No DEA. Nope, your screwed and you deserve it. Now if youll excuse me, ive got a nice heroin loving gentleman named CJ to see for his bi-daily pick up of 27 180 pill prescriptions of roxicet for a broken nail he suffered 10 years ago... Oh.. whats that? I cant? Oh, I cant... its..its illeg-..oh,. what? oh yeah, your on your death bed and you and your piece of crap buddies cant do anything about it?? Awesome. See you in hell, doucherocket." and then the doctor leaves and the DEA person dies. thats my dream a little dream for the fate of all of them.

For those who don't understand. What if ?

For those who don't understand. What if ?

A little visualization for the brainwashed idiots who hate, and
prosecute cannabis.

What if Kaiser Permanente's pharmacy, and doctors were raided each
year, denying access to their prescription? Doctors in jail for life
or hundreds of years? Staff also fined charged with lesser crimes. All
the databases and computers stolen. Patients caught in the middle with
no prescriptions.

Sutter Hospital same drill.

What if CVS pharmacy, Wallmart pharmacy, etc all got raided, the
employees, and doctors hassled, the patient databases stolen, and the
prescriptions unavailable since they were taken by misguided ("we just
follow orders") police? Doesn't matter that the orders are domestic
terrorism. Yeah police - you are domestic terrorists. You have become
that which you claim to fight.

Imagine the fascist media broadcasting press conferences of Eric
Holder's message promising not to raid the hospitals. OR Obama saying
the feds will lighten up.

I could drone on and on, but this should be plenty to light the spark
in your mind to understand how it feels to be harassed, prosecuted,
jailed, or fined like this. The doctors risk A LOT. (such integrity
only comes from pure love)

It's the ultimate in your face, to hell with your civil rights
example. Without your meds you get pain, and suffer.

I'd only add that most people also forget that it works on a
psychological level as well. Oh those sickly patients at that stinky
hospital, we don't want those germ ridden rat infested hospitals in
our neighborhood.

That's how it feels. Skin color doesn't MATTER!!!

The thing to do is to change the damn schedule for cannabis. It's a
piece of paper with ink on it, change the damn thing. The only
possible reason this hasn't changed is because there are nothing but
treasonous oath breakers in power. Fascist media being no help, does
what this establishment says so they get to keep their FCC frequency
allocation. Police follow orders, if the orders are bad they do EVIL
or DOMESTIC TERROR. (legally of course) Over the years, the tyrants
have managed to make the Constitution permanently intermittent. It's
as if nobody can critically think anymore because there is so much
corruption.

If this country gets another UN puppet (Republican Or Democrat)
pushing Agenda 21 instead of the US Constitution we are doomed.

That's it in a nutshell.
Class dismissed.

Get Real, Scott

You're being coy and disingenuous, Scott. You know perfectly well why the Obama administration is raiding dispensaries, but you are afraid of being labeled a conspiracy theorist by mainstream pundits. Come to think of it, I don't recall you ever stating explicitly that legal cannabis will simply destroy most Big Pharma profits.

I don't see how legalizing

I don't see how legalizing marijuana would destroy Big Pharma's profits. Marijuana isn't a cure all for every disease. Granted it has a wide range of therapeutic activity but I don't think the entire drug war is born out of a fear of competition by the drug industry. The drug industry and Universities are actively studying cannabinoids and related synthetic compounds for a number of diseases. Legalizing marijuana would make access to such compounds way easier and thus make research go much faster.

Hi doc,Big pharma is only

Hi doc,

Big pharma is only part of the pie.  Then you got alcohol and tobacco.  Then there are big industry (textiles, petrochemical, etc.) out there that doesn't want hemp to compete with.  A huge force keeping the drug war going is our current big budget government, with their justice systems and law enforcement primed for a never ending war on drugs.  To keep the wheels from falling off, the government has to spend money and continue the money supply;  They can't lay off thousands and thousands of government jobs when there is nothing in the private sector that can absorb these workers. That is what Ron Paul does not get.  If he wanted to win he would have a plan for putting his unemployed government back to work after his cuts.  Then you have stock holders; the government can't let private prisons, for examples, take a hair cut because the government was wrong all these years.  Ending the drug war would destroy the economy as we know it.  Our crazy leaders have built an economy around prohibition, and they can't and won't stop it.  Not only that but governments around the world fear marijuana because it truly is a wonder drug, mind enhancement, and an amazing and versatile commodity as hemp byproducts.  Then we even have international treaties that keep the whole thing wrapped up even more tight.

Yes Anon I agree. I wonder

Yes Anon I agree. I wonder how much money is actually being used for lobbying by these companies to specifically keep cannabis illegal though. Its logical to conclude they would be against it but there is any hard numbers to back it up?

In a lot of ways the drug war is like the military industrial congressional complex and the so called security industrial congressional complex.

right on, chewbacca! let me

right on, chewbacca! let me also add that obummer, like all elite corporate pols, is a power-mad scum bag who feels threatened by anything that may diminish his 'authority'.

The reason is obvious

The reason for the hard-court press against marijuana is obvious:  The pharmaceutical companies are pumping money into the DEA's Gestapo-like crackdown on medical marijuana because medical marijuana is cutting in on their business; and until the pharmaceutical companies can figure out a way to get in on medical marijuana business, they are going to fight it tooth and nail.  They simply will not allow medical marijuana to cut in on their profits.  In addition, the pharmaceutical companies are offering "generous" campaign contributions to politicians who will help make this medical marijuana problem go away.  Since this is an election year, and we know that the politicians who spend the most money win the elections, then additional campaign money is especially welcome regardless of where it comes from, and the pharmaceutical companies are sending their lobbyists to Washington DC with promises of money for those politicians who will side with them in this matter.  We the people must demand that the prohibition of marijuana be repealed, and we must elect politicians who will support this repeal.  In the meantime, we must demand that President Obama create an Executive Order that would cease and desist all raids and prosecution against medical marijuana patients, caregivers, and growers.

See this is the kind of blame

See this is the kind of blame game I am talking about. Don't take this as an offense because I agree it is logical that the pharmaceutical industry lobbies for drug laws to stay the way they are. But does anyone actually have any evidence that this is true? Does anyone have any proof the pharmaceutical industry has lobbying specifically against medical marijuana? I think its important that the true perpetrators and proponents of the drug war be revealed, instead of just people making accusations without anything to back it up. Efforts could be focused more appropriately.

Obama's marijuana insantiy

I wish Obama had been busted when he was regularly toking up in Hawaii, then we might have a different and better president and this creep would be working at a float rental stand in Waikiki instead of ruining lives from the Oval Office.
