Give yourself the gift of renewal just in time for the Fall! SUCCESSFULLY HOUSING SUBSTANCE USERS Tuesday, October 30, 2007 Course Time: 10:00am-5:00pm Mark Kinzly, HRTI Trainer Course Fee: $60 CASAC credits are available for this course This training will explain the relevance of a harm reduction philosophy in helping to support stable living situations for clients with psychiatric histories and substance use issues. This workshop will: address barriers to adequate and stable housing for substance using clients; provide information and tools for service providers to identify different strategies for tenant engagement in housing; and offer new strategies to support tenant housing stability. SEXY HARM REDUCTION: USING HARM REDUCTION TO DISCUSS SEXUAL RISK WITH DRUG USERS (AND THEIR PARTNERS) Thursday, November 8, 2007 Course Time: 10:00am-5:00pm Lonnie McAdoo & Emily Rigmont, AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts Course Fee: $60 Far too often, prevention counselors hear substance users receiving services say, "This is the first time I've talked about this," when discussing their sexual behaviors. Even substance users who are receiving services (needle exchange, treatment, medical care) often report never having been asked about their sexual practices. Yet, sexual risk may be a greater risk for this population and their partners than needle sharing. This session will explore some of the mechanics of applying harm reduction principles to high-risk sexual behaviors and will give an example of applying this framework to a case study. The training will also explore the use of the "Stages of Change" to assess where a client is in relation to behavior change as well as look at some of the specific skills and qualities needed to make appropriate inquiries about a client's behaviors. TILL 'WHENEVER' DO WE PART: HARM REDUCTION & COUPLES COUNSELING Wednesday, November 28, 2007 Course Time: 10:00am-5:00pm Lorraine Mary Pirro, M.A., M.S.W., Mental Health Counselor, FROST'D at Harlem United Course Fee: $60 This training will explore the similarities and the key differences between individual counseling and that of engaging couples -- straight or LGBT. Mental health providers often fall victim to the couple's "he said, she said", "the blame game", the "I've got a secret and I'm telling", or the Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde phenomenon where at least one participant is an "angel" in the room and a "devil" outside it. This training will enable clinicians to detect and avoid the pitfalls of "splitting" while at the same time strengthening his or her relationship and effectiveness with the couple as a whole. Finally, clinicians will learn how to utilize direct and open communication to confront harmful behaviors, create treatment plans that motivate change, assign creative and enjoyable "homework" and use humor to support a strengths-based approach to collaboration and healing. Special attention will be given to HIV/AIDS (sero)discordant couples, the impact of ongoing substance use, mental illness and stigma, and crisis intervention. BOUNDARY ISSUES FOR SUBSTANCE USE & OTHER SERVICE PROVIDERS Thursday, November 29, 2007 Course Time: 10:00am-5:00pm Andrew Hamid, Ph.D., ACSW, CASAC; Adjunct Professor, Columbia University School of Social Work Course Fee: $60 CASAC credits are available for this course This workshop will address a range of boundary issues relevant to substance use & other human service providers including the ethical significance of professional boundaries and the potential impact of boundary violations. Vignettes and role-playing exercises will be used to enhance skills building in the area of setting limits and assertive role clarification between client and counselor as well as counselor and supervisor. Emphasis will also be placed on the appropriate use of self-disclosure. PREGNANT & PARENTING DRUG USING WOMEN: THE POWER OF IMAGE & JUDGMENT IN OUR WORK Thursday, December 13, 2007 Course Time: 10:00am-5:00pm Wyndi Marie Anderson, HRTI Trainer Course Fee: $60 The image of the pregnant and parenting drug-using woman has been used for many purposes in our society. Those images actually serve to hurt the women and families that many of us work to support. This can also cause us to carry our own prejudices that can hinder our own best practices and bring about personal stress in our places of employment. This workshop will examine those images, our own prejudices, and we will begin to look at some solutions to avoid buying into common myths and personal beliefs (sometimes from our own histories). By doing this examination, we can better assist women who are struggling with drug use while being pregnant and/or parenting. This workshop will also look at the broader policy implications that focus on supporting pregnant drug-using women instead of criminalizing or shaming their behavior. _____________________________________________________________________ ***Our friends at Cicatelli are offering a training this Fall that might be of interest to our participants. Spiritual Self Schema Therapy: HIV/AIDS and Addictions presented by Paul Simons Date: 10/27/2007 - 10/28/2007 Time: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM For location & registration information please call (212) 594-7741 or visit: www.cicatelli.org/CALENDAR Description: Funded in part by the Yale University Harm Reduction Unit, this three-day workshop will introduce Spiritual Self-Schema (3-S) therapy. This is a spirituality-focused intervention intended for individuals of all faiths, developed by integrating Western cognitive-behavioral and Buddhist psychologies. The principal goal of the therapy is to help addicted individuals make a shift from what is termed the addict self to the spiritual self, the latter defined as a schema possessing the critically important property of doing no harm to self or others, which precludes using illicit drugs or engaging in behaviors through which HIV is contracted or transmitted. The purpose of this workshop is to provide participants with a comprehensive introduction to 3-S therapy. This will cover both the knowledge and skills needed to deliver the intervention, such that at the end, in conjunction with the comprehensive therapy manuals, they will be able to incorporate the intervention in their work with clients.
