Drug War Defenders Beg Obama to Help Prevent Pot Legalization

This Christian Science Monitor editorial positively reeks of desperation. You've got to give the prohibitionists at CSM some credit for seeing the writing on the wall, but their silver-bullet strategy for beating back the movement for marijuana legalization is a little less than intimidating:

What is needed is a dominant voice with a convincing, simple message to act as a counterweight to a legalization lobby that is run by a handful of savvy, persistent, and well-coordinated organizations and donors.

Who might take on that job?

President Obama, as a father and political leader, must use the bully pulpit for this issue. His administration must act preemptively and be explicit about federal action against any state that moves to make pot legal. It should not wait to reveal its plan of attack until a state referendum finally passes or a legislature succumbs.

The culture of pot acceptance must be reversed in America. It was turned back after 1979, and that can happen again. But the drug czar can’t do it alone. We need the man at the top, and all of the relevant administration players, saying the same thing, and saying it often. What’s good for the president’s children is good for the country. He must tell us so.

Tell us what, exactly? That millions of us belong in jail? I can think of nothing more massively ugly and pointless than an Obama-led assault on an issue that ignites his own base. Really, if Obama wants to send shockwaves through the block of young voters that helped put him in office last time around, then he should just go ahead and let the CSM editorial board write up his drug policy platform.

What the people at the

What the people at the Christian science monitor are advocating is exactly what Obama and Holder did to stop prop. 19. They know it is not a failed strategy since it worked so successfully in the last election. They are simply telling Obama to do again what he did before with one difference: instead of just Holder scaring the living daylights out of people alone Obama should join Holder. The point is that democracy is good for all things but cannabis issues. When it comes to cannabis issues the people at the Christian Science Monitor think what we need is a Christian fascist dictatorship that denies us democracy and civil rights because it is the "MORAL CHRISTIAN" thing to do. No doubt Obama has already caused many of his core supporters to desert him because of this. But then to drug warriors like Obama keeping marijuana illegal is the highest national priority and is far more important than reelection. The sad thing is that this will not help Gary Johnson. This issue will not decide the next election. It is unlikely that Johnson will become the Republican nominee. Most likely whoever the Republicans choose will be a drug warrior even worse than Obama who will oppose any medical marijuana dispensaries. Thus we are left in the next election with a nightmarish choice between one drug warrior who wont raid more than a few dispensaries and another who will close all dispensaries. We will be forced to choose between two enemies both of which will try to rig the election and strongarm state legislators into maintaining prohibition. This issue is progressing differently from the end of alcohol prohibition. The real question is will we able able to cause even one state to go legal soon. The enemies at the Christian Science monitor know that we will try to legalize. The question is whether we can be successful. With the fall of the Netherlands to the evil drug warriors it is imperative that at least one state legalizes so that the movement can have a substitute for what it has lost in Holland recently and lost in India in 1986 and in Nepal in 1973. For now lets march off to the Peter Tosh song "Legalize It".

What a pathetic editorial

What a pathetic editorial from the CSM.  However, the comments at the site are quite encouraging.  All the comments I read take the editors to task for their drug war support.  Way to go, readers of the CSM.

Christian Science Monitor Fails Its Mission

The CSM usually has an excellent reputation for objective journalism.  It’s won several Pulitzers.  But when it comes to drug topics, the editors really need to shut up.

The stated mission of the CSM is "To injure no man, but to bless all mankind."  CSM and its parent organization violate that mission whenever they spew their superstitious nonsense about cannabis.   CSM’s continued promotion of the drug war promotes, in turn, the war’s injurious victimization.  The CSM editors also continue to deny any benefit can be had from cannabinoid-based medications, thereby making their brand of “Christian Science” an oxymoron.

Under the influence of drugs, CSM reverts to its parent organization’s original faith healing beliefs, those of the Church of Christ Scientist, a wealthy religious cult.  Critics have described the church as being “like Jonestown in slow motion.”  Cult members have often been prosecuted for denying their children medications that otherwise would have saved their kid’s lives, instead relying exclusively upon prayer to heal.  So much for protecting the little children from drugs.

It’s telling that the majority of support for the drug war can be found among those who do not educate themselves well enough to know what evil lurks in prohibition, and those who belong to whacked-out, socially and personally destructive religious cults.  With cults as friends, prohibition doesn’t need enemies to sabotage its mission.  Defeat is guaranteed by declarations of stupidity like those appearing in the CSM.

Giordano

the Big Lie about inherent carcinogens

"Marijuana has been gaining popular acceptance, led by a state-by-state drive to legalize '“medical marijuana.”' Voters in 15 states plus Washington, D.C., have deemed a drug that contains carcinogens, is inhaled, and is neither regulated nor approved by the Food and Drug Administration, to be medicine."

Where do they get off telling people pot is loaded with carcinogens? So is anything that is carbonized. They try to mislead readers into thinking that there are carcinogens inherent in the plant. Also, notice how they never say it is possible to eat cannabis or vaporize it thus obtaining the beneficial effects without risk of bronchitis from smoke.

These people are on their last legs.

WANTED for Manufacture and Distribution-GOD

Tell me CSM-Why does the CREATOR manufacture and distribute these illegal Cannabis/Hemp plants?      Why doesn't the DEA investigate GOD?  HE even admitted HE put them here for our use on the first page of the Bible-Genesis 1:29 "I give you ALL herb bearing seeds...."   What kind of bad joke is this?  Sorry, GOD, but I'm NOT laughing.  Giving us illegal plants and locking us away for ten years for a few ounces!!!  Wouldn't that be the same as locking us up for growing corn and grapes in the 1920's?

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE is the all time greatest OXYMORON...

These people are into garbage science...and wouldn't know the love of Jesus if THE ANOINTING  kissed them on the lips. It was actually spread over the head and body...the only reason this rag is still in business is the subsidy given from their moron church.

The great fear is that when we re-legalize cannabis the sacrament churches will put these guys out of business in 50 years. FREE ROGER CHRISTIE !!!

Sounds to me like they don't

Sounds to me like they don't need to beg Obama at all.  He's doing a perfectly good job of continuing the drug war without a lot of begging and pleading.  In fact, he seems to engage in the drug war with a certain sense of arrogant delight, even after having inhaled, himself.  You know what that is, don't you: "Do as I say, not as I do."  How unseemly.  There's not much more I could say about this because I'll start spontaneously vomiting liquid projectiles.
