Prominent Drug Warrior Admits Anti-Drug Propaganda is Exaggerated
"One of the issues that's happened is that we've sent out all these messages; we've cried wolf too many times," Volkow said. "We don't need to exaggerate; the data speaks for itself. Armed with this knowledge, kids can make decisions." [San Diego Union-Tribune]
At first glance, it's nice that she at least admits that there's a lot of nonsense being passed around by anti-drug crusaders. It's not exactly news to anyone, but hearing this from Nora Volkow still surprised me. Anything resembling candor coming from a longtime prohibitionist like her is worthy of recognition.
Unfortunately, it's hard to take any of this seriously given Volkow's extensive track record of making crazy exaggerations. After the encounter I had with her, she really shouldn't be lecturing anyone about not crying wolf.
More likely, Volkow simply appreciates that being associated with crazy and excessive propaganda has done immeasurable harm to the credibility of the drug warrior elite and their prohibitionist agenda. If there's one lesson worth taking away from the drug war politics of the Bush era, it's that nobody wants to hear that crap anymore. Distancing herself from the excesses of her fallen peers is a smooth move for Volkow, but it won't work unless she actually stops trying to scare and manipulate everyone about the harms of drugs.
Wow, that is ambigious indeed...
Wow, that is ambigious indeed... confidently defiant yet seemingly concilatory!
Ready for a reasoned debate of the facts... might they be?
Not likely, like Scott says, just mad they botched their own efforts by crying wolf so often... everything they now say is just adding to the cacophony... blah blah blah!
Have they even learned that alcohol is a drug yet... or do they still say 'drugs & alcohol' too?
Are they even aware of U.S. Patent 6,630,507 which makes them liars... by their own government which claims: "Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties... cannabinoids are found to have particular applications as neuroprotectants... limiting neurological damage following... stroke and trauma... or in treatment of neurodegenerative diseases... such as Alzheimer's... Parkinson's... and HIV dementia"

B.S. What will the prohibitionists do when everyones 'bullshit blockers' have been activated? Remember, It's not the THC that worrys them... its the BSB's!
To Lie or Not to Lie—That is the Question…
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outraged pot smokers,
Or to take arms against a sea of hippies,
And by opposing them to get our asses kicked? To smoke: to buzz;
Evermore; and with a buzz to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to, 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To smoke, to buzz;
To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub;
For in that sleep of tranquility what dreams may come
When we have smoked many bong hits,
Must give us pause: there's the respect
That makes calamity of so long life;
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
The oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely,
The pangs of disprized love, the law's delay,
The insolence of office and the spurns
That patient merit of the unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a spliff? who would fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of running out of weed,
The prohibitionist country from whose bourn
No traveller returns joyous, puzzles the will
And makes us rather suspect those ills we have
Than fly to others that we do not trust;
Thus conscience does make heroes of us all;
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of drug oppression,
And enterprises of great pitch and moment
With this regard their drug laws turn awry,
And lose the name of justice.

Damn right the data about adult cannabis use speaks for itself
And the data about adult or youthful use of killer alcohol vs. cannabis turns the law into a pathetic bogus laughingstock. It's outrageous that cannabis is illegal for adults, and it's outrageous that youthful use of cannabis is treated more harshly than youthful use of alcohol.
STILL waiting for the drug warriors to give even a halfway serious justification for the extreme disparity in the status of alcohol and cannabis users. They just won't discuss that subject, for obvious reasons. Have you noticed that yet, Governor Schwarzenegger? How can you have a useful debate on cannabis legalization without comparing its effects with those of its legal but deadly competition?
poor thing
maybe she seen the error of her way and has realilized the sins she has commited against her fellow humans .maybe she has realized there is a speceal place in hell reseved for people who do these things .i would not want to live with the ghosts of those people murdered by police in the name of failed drug policy
What NIDA?
Is'nt it about time for a new NIDA director? Or is she set for life. Better yet, just desolve the whole organization.
I too have a similar
I too have a similar experience that makes me sure that NIDA Director Nora Volkow is exaggerating this time too. Thought there are a lot of data available in different means for the kids, they do not have the experience or the acumen to decide for themselves. parenting styles
