Study: Marijuana Users Less Likely to Get Injured Than Non-Users

A new study from Switzerland looked at substance use among people admitted to the hospital with injuries. Not surprisingly, people who'd been drinking alcohol were more likely to get hurt than those who had not. But what about marijuana use?

Conversely, cannabis use was associated with significantly lowered risk of injury. Whereas the risk for injuries associated with the use of less than a pipe or joint’s worth were not significantly different from the on associated with no use,  relative risks decreased with increasing levels of use… [BioMedCentral]

Not only were marijuana users less likely to be injured than non-users, but risk of injury actually decreased with larger doses. It's incredible. But my point here isn’t that the more pot you smoke the safer you'll be (although that is what the data suggests). It was a small sample and I kind of doubt that continued research would confirm a massive reduction in risk of injury among marijuana users.

What matters here is that marijuana clearly doesn't raise your risk of doing something stupid and busting your head open or whatever. What better indication of this could there be than the fact that people who show up all bloody at the emergency room are disproportionately not high on pot?

The researchers note that marijuana use may sometimes take place in safer environments than alcohol use and that marijuana users as a group might be more careful to avoid risks while under the influence. I'm sure both of these points are correct, but to really sum all this up: marijuana just doesn’t make you do dumb shit.

The widely-disseminated notion that marijuana leads to impaired judgment is simply false. Thus, I'm tempted to conclude that much of the propaganda aimed at associating marijuana with risk-taking behaviors has been motivated by cynicism on the part of our opposition, namely to the effect that they recognized -- and sought to preemptively obscure -- the relative safety of the drug.

One thing that never ceases to amaze me in the marijuana debate is the extent to which anti-pot propaganda is not only false, but is in fact often the precise opposite of the truth.

"It was a small sample and I

"It was a small sample and I kind of doubt that continued research would confirm a massive reduction in risk of injury among marijuana users."

I agree that to form a scientific hypothesis more people should be tested / questioned, but I just glanced at the study's abstact really quick, and according to it 486 people were questioned about this topic. Compare that to the testicular cancer study which fanatic drug warriors have been lauding the past few weeks in which only 369 people were questioned.

No way can any logical person can claim that this study is inaccurate while championing the results of the testicular cancer study. But then again drug warriors are not known for logic whatsoever.

Statistics

Just because someone is not impaired by anything, it does not guarantee total safety. Accidents happen because a momentary distraction occurs at the precise time nannoseconds before the injury causing incident which causes the emergency room visit a short time later.

Stonners usually spend our highs vegging out and chillaxing. We think of doing things and for those couple of hours we are protected by non-involvement and peaceful, powerful thoughts. No chance of injuring ourselves on the TV remote!! We have just as much chance of injury, we just don't think that would be a good idea to injure ourselves so we do not!

If total safety is the goal... better stop wasting your time.

I agree with your general premiss that cannabis users tend to chillout when they recreate... and less likely to do something stupid or hurt themself and others... from their favorite lounger!

But 'total safety' is just another unobtainable goal... as long as we remain flawed humans... who occasionally act irresponsibly... some more then others.

The greatest risk of injury the average pot smokers faces is from the black market environment and the drug warriors that circle like vultures.

And like vultures drug warriors must feed themselves ... on the flesh of others... it's the nature of the scavenger.

Vultures, rats, and drug warriors... all scavengers following their sick need to feed... on the weak, dying, and deceased!

Did they take into account

Did they take into account that people are less likely to admit to being high because it is an illegal substance still? Did they test these patients to determine current level of drugs in their systems? Just sayin....

Marijuana is safer than alcohol but.....

... I think it is ridiculous to assume it is safer than being sober. Socially, a large crowd of stoned people is much safer than a large crowd of drunk people or even sober people; however, when it comes to complex tasks such as operating a passenger jet, can you tell me you wouldn't be a little worried about boarding a 747 knowing the pilot had just smoked a little marijuana?

Why take it that far

Marijuana impairs judgment, and coordination, but apparently lowers your risk of injuring your self to the point you may need a hospital visit.

how do you get it should be ok to fly a plane while stoned from that?
Every time a legitimate legalization or decimalization debate states, people like you state talking like everyone will now try and do every thing they do all day high as a kite.

Most Marijuana legalization supporters want to see Marijuana treated like Alcohol. (Taxed, Regulated and Age Restricted)

Are pilots allowed to fly drunk? are people allowed to Drive Drunk?

Then why would marijuana lowering your odds at landing your butt in the hospital being reality or its out right legalization change that?

Re: Why take it that far

Why not take it that far to make the point that getting high is not safer than being in a sober state of mind? It's called having an honest, sincere dialogue. Just because I believe marijuana should be regulated and taxed, am I supposed to ignore what I see in the real world in America because of one small study of one hospital across the Atlantic? It's because I believe marijuana and alcohol are unsafe drugs that they should be regulated to a greater extent than they are now. Kind of pointless to support regulation of something if you think otherwise. alcohol "regulation" is a joke in this country.

Freedom of choice should not be taxed of regulated...

But irresponsible action that violates the rights of others should always be punished. Doesn't matter what drug you're high on: Alcohol, pot, god or gov't... or what have you!

Freedom of choice should not be taxed of regulated... if so we should start with religion for its harmful, and often deadly, irresponsible consequences.

In case you haven't heard religion and politics is the greatest cause of Cognitive Dissonance Disorder... a horrible disease that destroys critical thinking and fosters misplaced faith!

A persons right to worship their favorite diety(s) comes from exactly the same place as my inalienable right to consume marijuana.... the inalienable right to pursue happiness!

If a religion believes and acts in a way that violates my rights, the way prohibitionists like methodists typically do, then they become worthy targets for attack and ridicule.

Choose Reality

Swiss Study Makes Sense

A lot of accidents are due to stress that acts as a distraction, for example, driving angry. Cannabis reduces stress, but not too much, at least not like alcohol or Quaaludes, drugs which lead to goofy over-confidence and deliberate risk taking.

Despite the small sampling, the results for cannabis are what I’d expect due to the nature of the herb. I think the study stands a good chance of being reproducible, unlike the shady research of the opposition.

Giordano

Re: A lot of accidents are due to stress

A lot of accidents are due to carelessness too. Marijuana's effects can make you careless and distracted depending on how much you use. I knew a guy who was driving a car one morning while stoned and got so distracted with changing the radio stations that he didn't realize he was swerving in and out of lanes on a four-lane highway. Fortunately he didn't get in an accident and kill himself or somebody else. As reformers, we should be promoting regulation of the market along with laws and education against drugged driving.

my experience

I drive much safer while on cannabis than alcohol or sober and so does my friends and girlfriend. That being said, I believe if you are a regular toker you function in a safer manner while stoned but if you aren't used to being high you are more inclined to put yourself in danger IMHO. I was working as a roofer years ago in Annapolis and we smoked a big spliff one morning, then got out of the truck feeling goofy. One of the guys grabbed a heavy ladder, trying to show off, he pulled it from the truck and stood it up too close to a powerline it arced and killed him. I believe because he wasn't a regular smoker that being high(and stupid) killed him. I'm 100% for legalization and even think adhd in kids should be treated with cannabis but there is a risk that goes with being stoned especially if you aren't use to the high.
I tend to second guess my actions when I smoke and that lack of confidence might make me safer.

I've known people the same way with alcohol

Some people can get drunk as shit but hide it well because they are veteran drinkers who have learned to navigate the effects. The only thing that gives them away is their breath.

When I was in the Navy, 30 years ago, my car had autopilot...

Unfortunately, my imaginary autopilot usually stopped working 1 or 2 docks away from my own dock though.

I never woke up after a night of smoking pot wondering 'where the fuck did I park my car'!

One day I couldn't find my car anywhere on base... thankfully I found it just off base at the local Churches Fried Children... damn I loved their corn on the cob at 2 am... but surely all those chicken bones aren't mine?

Found out later that day that my drinking buddy that night had entertained the Churches patrons by stripping down and dancing naked while waiting for his order.

All of my irresponsible actions were done while high on alcohol... not cannabis!

Functional addicts exist everywhere!

AIRPLANE PILOT MARIJUANA

I WOULD FEEL MUCH SAFER IF A 747 PILOT VAPORIZED A WHOLE LOT OF ORGANICALLY GROWN GANJA BEFORE,DURING AND AFTER THE FLIGHT. IF THE PILOT WERE TO DRINK COFFEE GROWN WITH PETROCHEMICALS/PESTICIDES ETC I WOULD NOT GET ON THE PLANE

YALL HAVE STUPID LIES

you people are retarded to think people who smoke that crap dont hurt themselves or others ya'll go out and steal for ur nasty ass drug habit cuz ur addicted to that illegal stuff which is bullshit i pay taxes to throw you people in prison and god damn it i want it to happen you do nothing but steal cause crime and go around MOLESTING LITTLE KIDS it's a known fact people who try marijuana rape children the dea told us about it and its true if they said it so please do the world a favor u potheads and kill yourself and stop molesting kids

Stupid!!!??

What an intelligent, eye opening post! I am going to go down, right now, and rat on all of my friends. (Many of whom make six figure incomes!) They can write intelligibly, too. Maybe they can teach people, like you, while they are in prison, to do just that! (to be able to write and spell) And, by the way, damn it is not God's last name!

And, you really have no clue. That is, with what can be ascertained through this post, anyway!

Who you callin' retarded?!

Hey Dumbass

why dont you go kill yourself you stupid fuck. did you make it out of the 4th grade?.Its people like you that have fucked this world up, fucking "know it all's"! no one gives a shit what you think.

u know what

shut up u filthy child molester thats right cuz u smoke pot u rape children and damn right i know everything cause im better than your stupid pothead self.

Gotcha!

oops!

I just finished beating my wife and raping my neighbors daughter

Now I'm looking for gullible dumbshits like you to rape, savage, and steal from... just for the fun of it!

Personally I think you have us confused with the perverts and weirdos in the Catholic church.

Honestly, I make an honest 6 figures a year and guarantee I pay more taxes then you... as if that's a measure of anything... other then my better then average I.Q.

What a tool of a fool you are. But, don't kill your stupid self yet, your ignoprance & stupidity may be reversible if you stop listening to the dumb evil assholes at the dea immediately.

I'll kill myself if you kill yourself first... dumb fuck!

Kill yourself!?

I really hope you are not thinking of killing yourself. It is not the way to take care of things. Really. When people get this emotional on a post, I worry about them. I hate seeing anyone start up with the "killing yourself" stuff. It makes me worry they might be unstable and emotional and actually are thinking of doing something to themselves. Please don't do it. Call the help line. Something, at least. Just don't harm yourself.

the analysis all you guys

the analysis all you guys make about whether pot would or should or could or sometimes seems to in a certain way, or whether you remember the one time that this one thing happened to this one guy who was stoned, etc..; all of that is fine, but the purpose of there being a study is that it brings a scientific approach to the issue. All the anecdotal analysis in the world is just hypothesis. The study is what's supposed to be true. Sure, maybe we shouldn't conclude too much from just one study, and the results would have to be duplicated, and sure, it's important to scrutinize how serious or how well conducted or what margin of error there was or whatever, but still, the point is that it's scientific, and that means more than our anecdotal analysis. If this is the only study on this subject so far, then, technically, this is the most scientific thing you can say about the issue: The higher you are the safer you are.

why im in favor of the dea

becouse all potheads do is commit crimes.you all kill people when you get high and you go around breaking into houses, steal from your familys.potheads are EXTREAMLY VOILENT PEOPLE especially when they are doped up on that demonic plant.and to top it all off it's a world known fact that pot turns you into pedophiles.you sick fucks go to parks get high and look at the little kids playiing on the playgrounds with this sickning obesesed looks on your face where your desires for their innocents takes control and you run over and start raping them in the middle of the park nasty ass people, shame on you all for wanting to legalize such an evil thing and BTW marijuana has no medical value

Is that a question?

Q. Why I'm in favor of the dea?
A. Obviously you are a dumb evil asshole too.

If I were to diagnose your infantile hostility, for which I normally charge $200 for an hours session, I'd deduct that you were probably beaten and raped regularly by your perverted parents and desperately need some love... preferably outside your limited gene pool!

Is your uncle your father and his sister your mother? That would explain alot... but not everything?

You dude need serious professional help!

Actually, studies have shown

Actually, studies have shown that smoking marijuana decreases aggressive behavior in the user... so, that makes your arguement (that is entirely based on propaganda and misinformation, by the way) completely void.

Let's not feed the troll

I'm pro-choice on EVERYTHING!

But feeding trolls is hilarious... and there are sooooo many!

Trolls are gifts... that keep on giving... evidence of the absurd pretenses, paranoia, and pompacity of the prohibitionists that have declared violent war on our rights!

Truth is treason in the kingdom of lies - Ron Paul

yeah but when they tested pedophiles

all they found was marijuana and the fact that marijuana incurged their evil deeds to molest those children is stated by the child molesters themselves they even stated how they never wanted to molest children before they tryed marijuana but soon as they tryed pot they had this urge to go after little kiddies and take their presious virginidy from them before they hit 10

The Debate Never Ends

This discussion will never end. People are either for or against, and it will always be that way. Even if they legalise narcotics and regulate them, there will always be a lobby to ban them.
These debates are pointless, the same way other similar debates on war, politics and whether The Beatles were better or Elvis (definitely The Beatles) are.
Those who like to engage in these pointless debates are of course, welcome, but nothing is ever solved, facts are thrown back and forth, and no single view could ever be right as there is always another perspective to consider. Even when it is acknowledged that narcotics are generally hazardous to the body (plenty of evidence to support it, and plenty of dead rock stars to prove it too), people would still take drugs because they feel they should have the right to decide if they want to take something that is harmful for them. Also, plenty of people would argue that health effects of pot, in particular, are negligible, compared to other similar substances, and some will add to say that the negative effects are offset by its relative benefits. The abolitionists will argue the opposite, bring in tons of new studies, all of them either inconclusive or requiring further study (an endless cycle). This has been going on since Reefer Madness!!
The things people expend their energy on debating beggars belief, since the public will do what is right according to their convictions and there is no persuading people with scare stories or endorsements. To live with convictions is to live a life of folly, since life offers no certainties and owes nothing to the beliefs one sets him or herself. People will judge according to experience or knowledge. The real question should indeed be whether regulation solves anything. If the driver does not smoke pot when s/he drives, but still does so when s/he is home, shows that s/he is not against it in principle. People who abstain because of laws, and not because they feel taking drugs is wrong, is at the heart of the problem since people need to make decisions according to the right reasons, and that is, in a world full of information and differing opinions, impossible. Also, the initial report to which we are responding is pretty stupid - I mean, maybe even people who regularly eat bananas don't have injuries either - it is not like they protect you from injuries.
I am from England by the way which is thankfully, heaven on earth. Even with its problems, London is great for debates, with the multidudes of people from different parts of the world, so there is never a shortage of perespective, which is necessary to get a broader view of narcotics use not only in urban western countries, but their cultural function in other parts of the world, where people seem not to have the same problems associated with narcotics use in the West. Either way, legal or not, I prefer to stay away since I'd rather live longer than put crap in my lungs (as if tobacco isn't doing enough harm).

"I mean, maybe even people

"I mean, maybe even people who regularly eat bananas don't have injuries either - it is not like they protect you from injuries."

If there is a statistically significant difference, then there really must be a reason bananas eating people have fewer injuries.

Plus, it matters very much to debate this because we're not talking about liking or not liking marijuana as if we were talking about liking or not liking the beatles or elvis. If you were sitting in prison right now for selling marijuana, would the debate matter then?

Don't take it too far

This study shows a decreased risk of injury, not a lack of impaired judgment. Two wholly different things. I can easily believe marajuana use leads to a decrease in risky behaviors based on users I've known. As a proponent of legalization myself I think that should be the focus from this.

The idea that it doesn't impair judgement is ludicrous, something only a stoner would believe. I used to have a lot of stoner friends, and hung out with them while remaing sober myself. They were constantly coming up with trite, poorly conceived 'great thoughts'. Because I was sober I could see the problems, but the marajuana or acid made them believe they were profound. They were also unable to follow other's thoughts, but they didn't notice.

I kind of agree with you,

I kind of agree with you, except i think there is a difference between impaired thought and impaired judgement. you'd think one leads to the other, but not necessarily. i don't think stoners tend to do stupid things.

Many stoners engage in risky recreational activities

From what I've seen, most snow/skate boarders are stoners, a lot of hang gliding, river rafting, and rock climbing aficionados, also smoke the herb. I think of those activities as risky. Of course, so is horseback riding and jumping on a trampoline, and swimming (all 3 of which I do -- sometimes stoned, sometimes not), tho slightly less so. Many activities we engage in, all of us humans, are risky, but most of us never think about the risk, like driving; some, tho, not only think about it but get a thrill (which for some verges on addiction) from engaging in truly risky behavior (bungie jumping for instance, or jumping off a building or a cliff or even out of a perfectly good airplane with a parachute).

That sort of blows away the idea that stoners are lazy and that weed turns you into a couch potato, doesn't it?

confounding variable

Im 100% in favor of the decriminalization of marijuana but i think what leads marijuana users (especially high doses as stated) to less injuries is the activities one engages in while high most of which sitting on a couch or hanging out a buddies house. not to say that when a person is high their always inactive, but most of the time its the couch and the Cheetos. They should research how much more likely u are to choke on food due to cotton mouth.

WOW

I'm just someone studying for an exam and I came across this and this is just my simple opinion on marijuana. First marijuana is a natural plant, un-like: alcohol, meth, cocaine, pills, etc. Yes people take it in their own hands and do what they do to it, but if it was just the natural plant which was placed here for a reason, why can't we smoke it, bake it, or drink it? Is it not in a way considered a herb of some sort? Whats making marijuana illegal i believe is the selling of it on the streets and the lacing it and people not being responsible when they use it. If you want to treat marijuana like alcohol then do so and punish the ones who abuse it, not the one doing nothing wrong and are just chilling at home smoke a joint and watch a movie and munch out whats so bad about that it like sitting back having a beer at home watching the game but instead you dont get slobby drunk and become ignorant you are chilled and either pass out or eat too much to move or you could be like some and brainstorm and be creative with art and do their essays cause they can actually think clearly. I could go on forever but I have to get back to studying but I clearly think that if you want to come to some kind of solution to the marijuana problem then actually sit with individuals from EVERYWHERE and talk about the marijuana and the effects its had on their life im sure over half the population of the USA have smoked marijuana....
