Drug Czar Admits He Was Wrong About Medical Marijuana

Posted in:
Last month, Obama's drug czar raised eyebrows by claiming that "marijuana is dangerous and has no medicinal benefit."  Though not an unusual remark for a drug czar to make, the comment came as a surprise given the new administration's stated policy of respecting state medical marijuana laws.

Well, it looks like someone in the administration had a little talk with the drug czar, because he's already backtracking:

Asked if he regretted what he said, Kerlikowske said, "Sometimes you make a mistake and you work very hard to correct it. That happens. I should've clearly said 'smoked' marijuana and then gone on to say that this is clearly a question that should be answered by the medical community." [KOMO News]

Of course, this is still utter nonsense given the abundance of scientific evidence that medical marijuana works. But it's remarkable to hear the drug czar acknowledge making "a mistake." As false and obnoxious as his corrected statement may be, it's nice to know that the word "mistake" is in his vocabulary.

A little late with this news

A little late with this news :\
It'd be nice if he was legally allowed to say "Non-smoked marijuana has medicinal benefits" but he can't even do that.

Phone,fax,email communications bombardment is working!

Lets keep up the excellent work. The drug czar expected complacency and got exactly the opposite,as all of the global drug corporation stooges should. Medical cannabis is an excellent healer. Drug Czar Admits He Was Wrong About Medical Marijuana

I'm glad to hear such an admission by a top official.
Youths consume because adults produce intoxication. Admission alone won't help though.
I read somewhere that marijuana is the most abused drug and alcohol is the most abused drink.

So what he's saying is that

So what he's saying is that marijuana loses all medical benefits when it is smoked rather than taken in some other form? That sounds unlikely.

Continuing this dialogue...

Step 2: more discussion of the difference between smoking and vaporizing; assistance to authorized medical recipients in obtaining and learning to use a vaporizer; E-CIGARETTE with THC in the cartridge instead of present-day nicotine recipes. (Does the NIDA still provide stick-and-stem riefer in 900-mg. "cigarettes" to its list of patients? Has anyone confronted the Czar about that?)

Even his corrected statement

Even his corrected statement is wrong. "Smoked marijuana" has no medical benefit? Yeah it does. All the active ingredients of marijuana are still active if you smoke it instead of eat it, you just happen to irritate your lungs as a side effect. However, all drugs have side effects and most prescription drugs have worse side effects than 'smoked marijuana.'

Smokage = dosage

Try eating a brownie or taking Marinol. It's not the same as smoking marijuana; at least with smoking/vaping you can dose out as much as you need. Still feeling pain? Take another hit.

The Big G is always right

You know that marijuana will make you insane, right?
Do you know why there is no medical value in weed? Because they say so. It is a Schedule I controlled substance, and therefore will never be medically used. That's it. Period. End of story.
The DEA does not care what reason you might smoke weed, they will send you to jail and directly to jail. Do not pass go. Your fine will be way more than $200. They will put shackles on you even if you're in a wheelchair. Who cares if a person is dying very slowly and painfully. let's just throw him/her on a cold, dark concrete floor. Not to mention, let's have the inmates beat and rape him/her.
Why subject pot heads to such torture? Because this is the treatment they deserve. If you never smoke marijuana, then you have nothing to worry about. But if you do, society is rightfully determined to destroy your life.
Remember, if you smoke marijuana, you will be F***** in the A**!!!

You don't like to hear that do ya?

Well neither do I, cause it's BS! We the people need to rise against this perverse mentality listed above.

BiCZARro Kerlikowske should read U.S. Patent # 6,630,507

That's right, uncle scam currently holds U.S. Patent # 6,630,507 claiming: "Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties... cannabinoids are found to have particular applications as neuroprotectants... limiting neurological damage following... stroke and trauma... or in treatment of neurodegenerative diseases... such as Alzheimer's... Parkinson's... and HIV dementia".

It's not the THC that scares the crap out of uncle scam... it's the BSBs... the 'Bullshit Blockers'!

Kerlikowske sounds like just another fucking wanker... in a word full of wankers... and the bitch ain't my brother!

borden's picture

I appreciate the interesting

I appreciate the interesting information about the patent and the discussion of it. I also request that participants refrain from using language like "wanker." It degrades the otherwise good quality of your commentary, and thereby of the discussion overall. It can also end up reducing participation or readership by others.

David Borden, Executive Director the Drug Reform Coordination Network
Washington, DC

OK Dave, I'll call them criminals instead of wankers

For you Dave anything... it's your chronicle after-all.

But they/fundamentalist prohibitionists are in my opinion criminals and wankers of the highest magnitude... but i will drop 'wanker' and stick with criminals.

So what about that U.S. Patent? Why hasn't someone sued uncle scam yet for this crime. Or what about the drug rehabbers for false advertising ie 'Drugs & Alcohol' or 'Alcoholism and Addiction Cure'. Rehabbers should never be allowed to imply that alcohol is anything but a 'drug' and the christians that abuse it are drug addicts... nothing more... nothing less!

So what is appropriate...

...language when describing a sociopathic ,paid liar? I think the public should let it all hang out in regards to these "drugwar crazed " bureaucrats. All the harm they have caused over the years, they deserve worse.

Christian fundamentalists consider us defacto monkeys & dopers!

Why shouldn't we sling their smelly pooh back in their faces... otherwise how will they know how badly they and their theories smell!

I think fighting fire with fire is mandatory when speaking 'truth to power'! When fundamentalist prohibitionists (the crackheads of christianity) accuse us of 'reefer madness' we must always remind them of their 'reality madness' and admonish them for spearheading this 7+ decade crime spree that has done more to usurp the rule of law (the Constitution and DoI) then anything since the religious institution of 'human bondage'.

FYI: Do these delusional half-wits know that the word 'dope' comes from the dutch and means 'sauce'... which is probably where getting 'sauced' on alcohol comes from! Perhaps it's also time to stop allowing christians from changing the meaning of words, laws, and our republics history.

The sooner we end the organized crimes of our perverted uncle scam - and the disgusting god he worships - the better off a tolerant society will be!

Calling someone a wanker is childs play compared to the 'kill or incarcerate' tactics of our criminal enemies... none of which are my brother... and i'm confident that these religious 'punishers' will rot in hell...if their whacky theory of things is correct.

These creepy christians remind me of the sticker on my car: 'Fine, I evolved...You didn't!'

"Truth is Treason in the Kingdom of Lies"

Crackheads of Christianity

LOL... well put, Excellent write. Indeed, prior to 1937 Eli Lilly had over 100 patented medicines containing cannabis extracts. what hipocrits. ReLegalize Cannabis NOW.

Crackheads of Christianity?

I guess you all don't mind offending Christians who support the movement!? It looks like you are a bunch of people that use your mouths before engaging your brains!

There is absolutely nothing in the "holy scripture" that prohibits any drug or alcohol. It is a creation of modern man that tries to prohibit alcohol and all of the other drugs. It only serves to muddy up the waters and confuse kids into using dangerous drugs. The don't believe a thing they hear from adults because, so far, there is nothing but lying propaganda spouted to them. Lie to a kid and you lose his trust forever! Tell a kid MJ will kill him and he might try heroin because he never heard of anyone dying from THC!

There are plenty of Christians that frequent this site and believe in the movement. Please stop bashing us in the generalizations about the other hypocrites. It is hurtful. It is sort of like calling anyone who uses THC a "doper" or "pothead"!

I agree with you

I was raised a "Christian", tho I no longer associate with any church or organized religion. Religious people (regardless their religion) are as diverse as any other group of people, there are saints, sinners and assholes everywhere you look. Generalizations tend to "water down the message" regardless what the message might be, as most people recognize the diversity of humanity does not allow for generalizations to be absolutely true, we know there are enough "exceptions" to prove the generalization false. And so, the message one is trying to convey is regarded by the listener with the same jaded eye as the generalization one used in the argument.

I'm pro-choice on EVERYTHING!

The last thing we should do

The last thing we should do as a movement is use the same bigoted speech we have to suffer from the DEA et al.

Christians are people; some think critically, some don't. I'm a Christian who completely aligns with ending drug prohibition, so make sure that we argue against ideas and not people.
