Drug Czar Embarrassed By Marijuana Arrest Rates

Posted in:
New FBI data showing that 872,721 Americans were arrested for marijuana last year must have a come as a major shock to Drug Czar John Walters. Watch him just a week ago claiming that we don’t arrest that many people for marijuana:

Of course, the Drug Czar gets caught lying all the time, so no surprises there. But since when does he go around downplaying the results of the drug war? He typically bends over backwards and beyond to tell everyone how well he thinks his programs are working, so why is he so shy about these marijuana arrests? Amazingly, the Drug Czar is actually ashamed. After all, even he could never summon proud words to describe this. The drug war is, first and foremost, a massive campaign against peaceful people who smoke pot for fun. There’s no glory for the soldiers in that fight.

There is just nothing more revealing in the drug war debate than the moment when the people in charge start insisting that the whole thing is really quite civilized and reasonable. Of course, we don’t put people in jail for smoking pot because that would be cruel. Trust us, the people we do put in jail are major assholes, every last one of them. And if you hold this chart at a 45 degree angle and squint, you’ll see that we’re producing exciting results this year.

Meanwhile, the same people who insist that they don’t want to put pot smokers in jail will go raving nuts if you try to pass a law that reduces the number of pot smokers who go to jail.

Looking for the easiest way to join the anti-drug war movement? You've found it!

Is this guy married or have any children?

I can't imagine how the Drug Czar can call a parent's concern about the impact of a drug policy on kids idiotic and accuse them of just trying "to stick it to the man."

Unbelievable

"We are a society that prizes our freedom." He can barely say it with a straight face.

Job Qualifications for Drug Czar

Maybe there’s a qualifying test that job candidates for Drug Czar take that measures how many lies they can spew within the shortest time.  Winner gets to be Drug Czar.

Walters speaks (lies) to his base, to the exclusion of the person who just asked the question, and to the contempt of those most familiar with the drug war’s fallout and what the so-called drug war really achieves.

He talks past the expertise of the reformers and legalizers to deliberately jumble their message and thereby induce a state of confusion in the minds of the drug war illiterate when they’re confronted by mutually conflicting points of view.

The drug war illiterate include all those who require periodic injections of drug-war-hype in order to produce a clear conscience when they send their dear little Bobby or Buffy off to the slammer to get buggered, or if they’re lucky, to a drug rehab run by right wing authoritarians who will inflict some state-of-the-art torture on the errant child.

The drug czar’s office acts as a pulpit from which Walters reassures the faithful.  The faithful include politicians, judges, police and other drug war professionals.  But by far, the faithful embody panic-stricken, idealistic parents who are unduly influenced at taxpayer expense by a corporate media campaign specifically designed to terrorize them about illicit drugs.  It’s a vicious circle from which only the fortunate few escape.

The best escape for the fortunate few is drugs.  What else?  Who could put up with all the drug czar crap and not get high once in a while?  With drugs, symptoms of Bullshit and Terror are reduced.  Eliminate all drug czars.  Feel better now.  Use only as directed.

John Walters is a celibate moron

Economic troubles have led to declines in drug use, not arrests.

When unemployment is low such as during the 1960's and 1990's, drug use flourishes, despite record arrests we had during the Clinton years.

Business as usual . . .

I've used and abused a variety of substances over the years and one thing I can say with all honesty is that drunk, sober, high, tired, angry, careless or just plain lazy, I have always been willing to stand accountable for my actions. I believe it's way past time for my government to do the same. If these idiots are going to take credit every time drug use declines a tenth of a percent, they should be grown up enough to take responsibility also for the lives damaged by their policies.

How on earth can he get away with this?

This may be the most blatant lie I have ever heard from Czar Walters. It's interesting to note that the ONDCP's own report entitled, "Who's Really in Prison for Marijuana" (which itself is a compilation of disingenuous half-truths and distortions) had this to say:

"It would be wrong to suggest that simple possession offenders never see the inside of a prison cell. Sometimes they do, of course. A few may be sentenced outright, even when no other charges or aggravating factors are involved." (p.15)

In other words, it's clear that Walters knows perfectly well that he's lying. Is there anything that can be done about this?

What can be done?

MASSIVE ORGANIZED CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE.

IE WE WON'T TAKE YOUR LYING BS ANY LONGER.

I WOULD WANT 100,000 POT SMOKERS (CAN WE MUSTER MORE? SURELY!) TO CONVERGE ON THE FUCKING WHITE HOUSE. THE MILLION JOINT MARCH. WATCHING THIS FUCKING LIAR ENRAGES ME. THIS THUG AND HIS DOBERMANS HAS DESTROYED MILLIONS OF HOMES AND FAMILIES.

AMERICAN PEOPLE STAND UP.
AMERICAN LEADERS WHO STILL HAVE THEIR SOUL, STAND UP!
AMERICAN INDIVIDUALISTS WHO ENJOY AN OCCASIONAL BUD
AMERICAN FOLKS WHO ARE ILL AND USE CANNABIS, STAND UP
CANNABIS IS THE DUTCH WORD FOR CANVAS. REMIND THESE FUCKS WHAT ALL SAILS, ROPE, BEDDING AND MANY OTHER THINGS WERE MADE FROM AND NO IT WASNT DU-PONT'S NYLON.
WHY ARE WE LETTING THEM OWN US? OVERWHELMING FORCE? HOW ABOUT OVERWHELMING NUMBERS!
LEAD TO US TO DC
I WILL FOLLOW PLANT IN HAND.

liars. crooks and liars. all of them. crooks and liars. liars and crooks. murderers. immoral fucks, if we could rid the world of your ilk walters, we'd be much closer to real democracy.

He's the one telling dangerous lies

He says "it's not just a lie, it's a dangerous lie", saying that telling kids marijuana is not that harmful will make them use it. Not only is telling people that marijuana is not that harmful not a lie, but he's the one who lying, and a dangerous lie. He's telling people they won't get arrested, and that's a much more dangerous lie, since we all know getting arrested is much more harmful than smoking marijuana.

He portrays reformers that way because he needs to

He starts out saying "there's a lot of denial out there, as your question shows", as if the guy asking the question *surely* was an addict in denial.

If he didn't portray reformers as irresposible pot heads who are just trying to "stick it to the man", he'd have to actually answer their questions and refute them, and he knows he wouldn't be able to do that.

He never answered the guy's question of why marijuana use has gone down in other countries, then he lied about not arresting people, and then (after being energized by the crowd laughing at something he said), just started to freely attack and make fun of the guy for being an irresponsible pothead and for endangering children.

And what really pisses me off is how the crowd supports Walters in everything he says, and don't even give a moment's thought to the reformer's question. Did you notice that woman who stood up and gave the guy a bad look just for asking the question?

Next time he gets to ask a question

The guy asking the question asks too broad a question for someone like the Drug Czar. Walters can mess around with an answer without really answering the question. Next time, he should go for one point and one point only. He should ask: According to FBI numbers, there were 830,000 arrests for marijuana last year. Is that true?

Let's see if Walters could avoid the truth then.

sorry, that's 872,000

sorry, that's 872,000

A way to get the point across

A way to get the point across to people who seem to believe the crap Walters keeps spewing is to ask him this next time:

"Last time I asked you about the level of incarceration of people on marijuana charges you answered me that, basically, people don't go to jail for using marijuana; that they only go to jail for dealing marijuana. You must realize that what you're describing is usually referred to as decriminalization. Do you really believe marijuana in the United States has been decriminalized?"

A corner

The next question of Walters needed to be "If adults do not get arrested for smoking pot, then why cant we just say 'we dont and wont arrest adults for smoking pot'?".

Amused is me...

Ok, "we dont arrest people for marijuana ... it just doesnt happen" .. "the lies that are spread around on the internet"..

These lies are spread by his own office!

Taken from http://www.ondcp.gov/drugfact/marijuana/marijuana_ff.html about halfway down the page:

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Uniform Crime Reporting Program, there were an estimated total of 1,841,182 state and local arrests for drug abuse violations in the United States during 2007. Of these drug abuse violation arrests, 5.3% were for the sale/manufacture of marijuana and 42.1% were for marijuana possession.16

When will government officials start being held responsible for blatant lies. This shows that his office KNOWS the truth, and he chooses to state contradictory information.
