Stigma and discrimination faced by Current drug users in Chennai

Submitted by David Borden on
Stigma and discrimination faced by drug users or people who use drugs in Chennai is multidimensional a) Stigma and discrimination by the Law enforcement – The Police even though are sensitized about treating drug users with sympathy they are found to ill-treat the drug users more often and do not refer them to NGO’s. b) Stigma and discrimination by the Family- The family when comes to the last stage that the person will not discontinue using drugs they treat him as a third person and at most times is literally sent away. c) Stigma and discrimination by the Society – the Society considers the drug users as merely criminals and often physically harmed. d) Stigma and discrimination by the NGO’s or CBOs run by EX-users. The Current drug users do not frequent the DICs most often since the staffs treat them at times with no dignity, even though the staffs too were ex-users. IVDU,
