(One of the reasons) why marijuana is still illegal
This information generally requires no specialized knowledge. Similarly, by now it has become apparent to the point of becoming common knowledge, that the dangers of marijuana smoking are seriously overstated, to say the least. Some even call marijuana "the safest therapeutic substance known to man." Who?? None other than Administrative Judge Francis Young of the DEA in In The Matter Of MARIJUANA RESCHEDULING PETITION (Docket No. 86-22). It is very likely that even the most stalwart DEA officials don't really believe in the dangerousness of marijuana.
So, how come it remains in Schedule I?
The answer lies in the first paragraph. Removing marijuana from the list of "evil" illicit drugs would substantially reduce this nation's drug problem: without marijuana the number of drug users - other drug users - would drop significantly. A dramatically smaller drug problem wouldn't justify tens of billions of dollars in funding that the DEA currently receives. Regardless of the objective pros and cons of marijuana use, the DEA will always oppose the rescheduling of marijuana simply because they want to retain their allowance.
In order to request an addition, deletion or a change in the schedule of the drug, one must petition the DEA. When a petition is received by the DEA, the agency begins its own investigation of the drug. Then, the investigation goes through some more motions, until the DEA Administrator reviews all available data and makes a final decision whether to propose that a drug be controlled and into which schedule it should be placed. I wonder how objective you would be in making a decision that has a potential to deprive you of a substantial majority of your budget?
revenue right in front of you
legalizing marijuana would allow the government to tax it just as they do alcohol and tobacco. big money!! millions of $ spent on keeping it out of the country could be spent on keeping heroin, cocaine and other such drugs out, or rehabilitating those who have fallen victim to it already. the legalization would also put organized crime out of the pot business. our prisons would not be filled up with potheads that learn about heroin from real junkie criminals. people with illnesses that suffer great pain could just go to the store and get what they need.
technology could also be improved so that pot is higher quality.
someone please tell me what the negative side of legalization of marijuana is. oh, and fill up that bowl again please.
peace
high prices
we the people cant afford the dea .paying to protect us from a harmless substance .sorry fellas your fired get a real job doing a service we realy need stop busting grass and start mowing it
The power of pot
Many times I read here discussions of pot potency, addictiveness, side effects, physical damage, and other "reasons" given by the government and its supporters for the continued illegality of marijuana.
The fact is that any substance that is declared illegal is so labeled for reasons of grasping power and money. It is a way to seize assets, invade privacy, and control the populace. Drugs typically are outlawed in order to sanction a particular racial or societal group. Government leaders warn of the lethal dangers of drug use with a drink in their hand. All other reasons are spurious, and many would be laughable if not for the harm they encourage. Scientific evidence of substance effects is ignored. Warrants are signed allowing the authorities to trample the Constitution, invading personal privacy and taking individual assets. All this damage is done under the banner of "helping the public" and "fighting crime" when in fact the public is harmed and crime is encouraged. The real truth is that the DEA is one of many bloated federal agencies dedicated to earning a paycheck and increasing their power. Until Prohibition is once again defeated, the criminals will have a corner on the market.
