Breaking News:Dangerous Delays: What Washington State (Re)Teaches Us About Cash and Cannabis Store Robberies [REPORT]

Rudy Giuliani Hates Medical Marijuana, But He Loves OxyContin

Rudy Giuliani has again lashed out at medical marijuana on the campaign trail:
"I believe the effort to try and make marijuana available for medical uses is really a way to legalize it. There's no reason for it," the former New York mayor said during a town hall-style meeting at New Hampshire Technical Institute.

He also said there are better alternatives.

"You can accomplish everything you want to accomplish with things other than marijuana, probably better. There are pain medications much superior to marijuana," he said. [AP]
I've already written about the potent irony of Giuliani's opposition to medical marijuana, but if he won’t shut up about this, neither will I. If Rudy Giuliani won't stop talking trash about medical marijuana, and endorsing pharmaceutical alternatives, I won’t stop bringing up the fact that he worked as a hired consultant for OxyContin manufacturer Purdue Pharma.

Giuliani has less than no credibility on this issue because he worked for a company that is in direct competition with medical marijuana. It's really that simple. His claims that medical marijuana is part of a broader legalization conspiracy are also ironic considering that Giuliani played a key role in keeping OxyContin legal after it was linked with widespread abuse. Giuliani personally met with former DEA administrator Asa Hutchinson and persuaded him to leave Purdue alone. Meanwhile, abuse of pharmaceutical drugs, particularly OxyContin, has become the fastest growing drug problem among America's youth.

To be clear, I don't believe OxyContin should be illegal. Patients must be allowed to choose medicines based on what works for them, whether it be OxyContin, medical marijuana, or tree bark. But the transparent hypocrisy of Giuliani's behavior is so over-the-top that it is just impossible to ignore.

Oxycontin, are you f*cking

Oxycontin, are you f*cking kidding me? OKAY, So basically lets just make heroin legal as well.

Giuliani....American Dumbass.

ok...first off, marijuana has over 100 documented medicinal benefits that doctors around the world credit. second, marijuana has no overdose, and no deaths attributed to the substance alone. He said that there are other methods that our better than medicinal marijuana...what like chemotherapy? Sorry i'd rather light up a joint, maintain a steady appetite and low stress levels along with reduced nausea then have my hair fall out and vomit constantly...not to mention slowy and painfully kill myself. It is PROVEN that marijuana slows the aging process of benign and malignant cancer cells.

Facts are well....Facts. Fact is Giuliani is an ignorant piece of shit that does not care for the well being of thousands that would benefit from medicinal mariuana.

AIDS
CANCER
GLAUCOMA
MS
ANOREXIA
HIV

The list goes on....and on....and on....

I can understand that you

I can understand that you may not understand something you read, but its pretty bad when you cant get it when a person says it out loud. After he complained about his painful cancer he said something along the lines of:

"If the FDA would change its position on Medical Marijuana, I would have to consider it"

That to me, seems like a very good answer with the possibiltiy of atleast a little hope.

You are misunderstanding

That isn't what he is saying, he's saying Medical Marijuana. If there is a medical benefit that comes with using Heroin then may as well. We are talking clear cut medical usage. Saying it will be abused can be used for any wide spread of a druge from Caffine (found in most Soda's) to Marijuana.

Plant based drugs

Isnt it true that morphine, vicoden, methadone and a bunch of other pain meds are opium derived? Yes, they all come from a lovley little flower called the poppy, cocaine and crack cocaine come from a small leafy plant called a coca plant, cocain is used medically for its numbing effects (novacaine) ect.

Most pain meds seem to come directly from plants, through various proccesses certain things are isolated and we get a nice little pill. marijuana is what it is. Its a flower thats picked and smoked. There is no proccess required. So it is my opinion that marijuana wont be legalized medically because of a lack of profitability. Billions are made off of medications, and to tell people they can plant a flower and feel better would be suicide for a corporation selling pills to cancer patients.

So right, so right.

That is definitely what I'm thinking as well. Everyone of 'them' have their hands in each other's pockets.

America: For the Corporations, by the Corporations. We don't matter anymore.

Green(backs)

Well said....

You cant patent (or make money off of) a drug if it is made of all natural ingredients. Marijuana will never be legal in America until people start thinking with their hearts and not with their wallets. I wont hold my breath.

Lack of profitability?

Lack of profitability, are you bloody kidding me? A quick look to the alcohol/tobacco industries is all you need on that subject. Sure, tobacco is addictive, but alcohol is far less so. And both industries are booming. Any industry that can alleviate pain/discomfort of any kind is bound to be swimming in money. Even if it were legalized only on a medical basis, there's a large enough market for the stuff to satisfy more than one company's needs, thus creating competition, which breeds innovation. Stronger marijuana, lowered prices, you know, all of that evil, capitalist pig stuff I'm so fond of. To suggest that there is no market for it that's profitable is laughable at best, downright ignorant of economics at worst.

Seriously...

Let us support something that is proven to be addictive AND to encourage people to use pharmaceutical company's crap. This will, in turn, give them more and more money, and raise necessary med prices. It fills the pockets of the politicians vested in the companies and the lobbyists of those companies and companies themselves. While regular Americans pay more and more for things they actually need.

My point: Why not use what actually does work, with no possibility of addiction, that just so happens to be the US's BIGGEST CASH CROP.

So much injustice. I feel so small and helpless to change anything, from corruption in the gov't at every level, to the ridiculousness of archaic laws with no pertinence in modern times.

AGH!

LEGALIZE IT ALL

Seeing that the cia oversees the import of 90% of all the heroin and cocaine that comes in to this country and that weapons manufacturers are the biggest drug money launderers, it just blows my mind how ignorant the populace is. if they legalized ALL drugs their intrinsic VALUE would drop and there would be far less WAR and CHAOS in the world. The punishment is rediculous in some states. Archaic bullshit that the "special interest" textile industry saw fit to put in place 50 years ago. Hell our presidents GREW it! Cancer patients have a RIGHT to it. Its basically a Civil war, a war on our own populace. And then some of the biggest drug dealers in history are on television as hero's immune to prosecution. Enuff of these lies and double standards. I want no part of it...

holy fuck you guys are some

This article is informative and makes sense. SOME of these comments are intelligent and well written. But really...
"It's OK to blaze." ?!? Grow up and stop smoking so much weed and maybe you too can have an intelligent response.

I Wrote To Giuliani

I wrote to him on this subject and await his response..
This is what i wrote to him...

"I believe the effort to try and make marijuana available for medical uses is really a way to legalize it. There's no reason for it,"

"You can accomplish everything you want to accomplish with things other than marijuana, probably better. There are pain medications much superior to marijuana,"

I read this on http://stopthedrugwar.org/chronicle_blog/2007/jul/10/rudy_giuliani_hates... and it makes no sense to me...
How could you ever support the most addictive pharmaceutical drug (OxyContin) on the market and completely put down one of the only non-addictive, pain-relieveing, appetite-simulating, and energizing substance which is also believed to be able to even cure various diseases. By saying that it is only a step to legalizing it makes me question your intelligence, since not too many pharmaceutical drugs ever become legal for non-medical reasons. And if you believe marijuana should be illegal than why don't you make alcohol illegal as well, since it isn't helping anything. And yes, you are correct, there are a lot of pain-relievers that are superior in strength, but they contain morphine sulphate, which suppresses respiration. So how exactly are they superior with a possibly lethal side effect?
Please Respond If You Wish To Receive My Vote.

Giuliani

Great Point! I question lots of Congress and folks like Christie an Giuliani on their intelligence! The reason why marijuana is illegal is because by making it illegal Made its cousin hemp illegal. In the 1930's marijuana was made illegal in essence makiing Hemp illegal. This made companies like DuPont very rich. If we grew hemp in place of all the corn that we grow to produce ethanol we could almost replace fossil fuels with a 90% cleaner burning Biodiesel that can be made from hempseed. One acre of land will produce 30 barrels!! This only accounts for the oil that comes from the seeds on the hemp plant. The crushed remaining seed parts can be used as a rich omega 3 6 and 9 cattle feed that helps reduce consumer costs at the store. This is done when farmer can make $4,500 an acre verse $800 an acre for corn. The remining parts of hemp plant can be used for fibers that can be used for everything from paper, clothes, automotive, building materials like hempcrete and 25,000 other products. Hempcrete is stronger than concrete And 1/6 the weight and SEQUESTERS Carbon while concrete emits carbon!! All this money that leaves our economy for importing fossil fuels That can stay here producing our own fuels and most importantly helping to Keep our planet green. I question our politicians intelligence when we can do all this with hemp not to mention all the benefits of marijuana, hemps cousin. The list on medical benefits from marijuana use is a long one And covers fighting cancer, seizures, pain and many more... Thousands of people die each year from alcohol, pain pills, and cigarettes. No one in history has ever died from marijuana . Big business like Oil, tobacco, Alcohol, pharmaceutical, Private prisons, prison food companies have allot to lose if marijuana Is legalized. Who do you think lines the pockets of our politicians. It ills me that 60% of the nation is for recreational marijuana an >70% For medical but the folks that we put in office are fighting this. I could keep going but it raise my blood pressure with discust of our public officials.

talking the talk......

I love to sit down for ten minutes each night and smoke some very fine, homegrown marijuana. On the weekends after I work my 55 hour work week to afford to pay for my utilities and health insurance, I organize rallies. Man, have a small rally. Don't get caught with any herb , and make a statement. Guess what happens when all over the land there is PUBLIC reaction. Not this bullshit tabloid newspaper GOSSIP. When your neighbor Jack and Jill see you, They will talk. It will matter to the people. WE ARE THE PEOPLE. Its free to get 20 people with signs protesting at your courthouse. Make pamphlets that give FACTS about the ill effects of alcohol or tobacco and prescription drugs. Give the facts of how much hemp was grown in the USA prior to 1950. Do something. You may see me around the SouthWest Suburbs of Chicago. Start watching the news. All over the land there will be rallies. Eventually the PEOPLE will speak and not CORPORATE giants that hold political office. Our government has been run by SLAVEDRIVERS too long. We are the modern day slaves. WE must wake up and fight every injustice brought upon our people. I have dedicated myself to a worthy cause: legalizing marijuana completely. The day that a can of beer grows on a plant will never appear. But I grow some very fine plants that give the sweetest bud around. Puff a fattie for me and FREE THE BC3

WOW

The drug laws in this country are so screwed up! the most addictive and dangerous drugs are schedule II but the mind expanding beneficial drugs such as psychedelics and herb are deemed to have no medicinal value. The gov't is scared of these drugs and therefore try to control them.

1.3% of the counrty, since 1914 has been addicted to drugs. This number has not changed. The drug war is a for the government to show haw powerful they are and threaten people into acting the way they want us to.

Meanwhile the people that make the laws are the ones getting high, but they get away with no jail time

Federal Government Agencies - Hypocrisy Infestation

Guiliani will not be president. I certainly won't vote for him. It's time for the Dems to get the chair. Maybe there will be a chance of the Hinchey-Rohrabacher Amendment passing Congress soon. We will see. Pelosi is sympathetic to medical MJ patients, from what I've read. The problem with government that all the agencies do not work together often times contradicting one another. Look at the CIA and FBI, for instance, with regards to security issues. It's whose got the information first. It took 9/11 and lost lives for those jerks to work together. Federal agencies shooting themselves in the foot is nothing new. They've earned that reputation. Things will change when enough American citizens get fed up and show solidarity regarding medicinal use of cannibis. There are so many uses for the cannibis plant. It's a plant! Why would NIDA supply 7 patients with MJ for medicinal use, then the DEA bust down the doors of dispenseries and patients who are dying? Because they're all hypocrites! It's about ideology. Not about scientific evidence! Anytime you have something based on ideological principles you can look for failure. And that's what the War on Drugs campaign is. A failure! It's a joke!

Gosh! I'm so worked up, I need to go take my medicine!

MEDICINAL MJ is HERE TO STAY!!!!!!!

Rock on MPP, NORML, and others!

for legalization

To change the laws we will have to show the money side of this issue. Most opposition is from citizens that are very much against any tax. Inform them of no new tax or possible tax cut if MJ was legal- people vote their pocketbook and we are already happily paying their tax for them.It also reduces police actions and incarceration space for more critical issues, another tax cut.

Ron Paul to end the war on drugs

If you want to end the war on drugs, you simply need to elect Ron Paul.

http://libertarianempire.com/Paul.html

Don't forget the 9th and 10th Amendments

I would say those Amendments basically cover what I would consider an obvious individual right to ingest whatever substance they want, whether it be for medical purposes, or recreational.

Where do people get off thinking they can make these decisions for people? I find the idea atrocious.

Giuliani is a clown.

If he wins this election, then we know this shit is rigged. Seriously, he's a fucking lobbyist for the insurance companies, and he's supposed to be our leader?
As long as we can keep the church out of our government, I'm cool with it. But I feel it creeping in there, and that shit is scary. If this government gets taken over by the church I am out. I do agree that idol worship and weird ceremonies are really archaic, and that universe itself offers wonders much more amazing than any religion.

All your comments about

All your comments about "rednecks" and "the confederacy" really make you look like a dumbass kid with no knowledge of history, and no tolerance for other people.

Cocaine is already legal

Cocaine is already used by emergency room doctors across the country - including military doctors - for things like major nosebleeds.

(Despite what what some websites say, I know for a fact that Cocaine has been used medicinally and legally by doctors as late as 2005. I have the label from a small bottle of cocaine in one of my scrapbooks. The doctor gave the label to me as a souvenir after he finished off the bottle packing a patient's bloody nose.)

Opiates are chemically very similar to heroin. Ever hear of Morphine? It is still one of the major painkillers in use.

The harder drugs are already legalized, WTF is the problem with medicinal marijuana?

Rudi

Is the lucky guy who happened to be at the right place at the right time to promote is law and order crap.

His wife (3rd) is a whore who didn't respect his marriage.

Whay would anyone respect him?

the old confederacy

It'd be fine with me if New England, the Great Lakes States and the West Coast merged with Canada. The rest of you can have George Bush, who you voted for. Well, take Ohio south of Canton.

Weed and God

Here is one problem. Jesus is not who you think he is, and the God of the bible is not who you think he is. Why are they men anyway? Jesus is the sun god RA. This is why he is the light of the world. Without the sun(son) there is no life. I could go very deep with this but not yet. 12 disciples are twelve signs of the zodiac. This is why jesus will be with you until the end of the age(aries). Not end of the world. 12 disciples+ twelve months=12 signs Four seasons = 4 gospels. It is ridiculous it is something to get us arguing over...If I want to drink liquid drano thats on me. I am a free man I can eat or smoke what I want. Oh wrong we are not free then we are slaves. That is the bottom line.

Buy Drugs Wisely

I agree Scott Morgan " Patients must be allowed to choose medicines based on what works for them, whether it be OxyContin, medical marijuana, or tree bark. But the transparent hypocrisy of Giuliani's behavior is so over-the-top that it is just impossible to ignore."

There is a difference...

Maybe someone should say to Rudy that medical use is not legalizing. I personally know some paople who ned it desperately!

IF YOU WERE IN PAIN FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE WHAT WOULD YOU DO

I can say for a health care sector and my professional point a view that the governments in the western world has got it all backwards. I am a psychologist and suffer from mutable sclerosis and have to take Oxycontin 180 Mg every 12 hours. I am going to be in pain for the remainder of my Painfull life. I can understand the abuse potential of opiate analgesics and in my line of work encounter it routinely bit those who can not afford medical insurance or the prescriptions are driven to find and seek out alternative means of affording analgiser this is due partly or mostly to the cost of the medicine and the governments not controlling the greed of the pharmaceutical industry world wide witch it does not reflect the manufactured or clinical costs of analgesia like Oxycontin M/R and the cousins of opiate pain killers. This and for other reasons inevitably leads the poor and frustrated victim to go and buy them of a street dealer for cost reasons and as they are not under the supervision of a doctor or health care professional, when the time comes to stop the meds or if they can't afford more they encounter with drawl symptoms and pain witch leads to finding the money and then crime is committed to fund this and its a vicious circle. These victims are a result of the westerly world and the governments not helping and propley managing the pharmaceutical industry and the governments are to blame in my eyes its neglect they caused this they should help by lowering the cost and offering alternative treatment so to those who use cannabis and other stuff I say to you, you ate not to blame and you are doing what they would do if they were in your shoes and you are a result of the negligence and lack of moral human rights and I support you all the goverment caused you to seek out alternative methods and now they want to make it harder this is a beach of human rights and its cause and effect witch our governments seem to have self declared immunity and no obligation to their people.

just an example

Sorry for the extra posts my computer is a little slow. I am currently treating 8 patence and I will give you an example of one. A girl in her late twenties lived in L.A as an ex pat from united kingdom she was refered to me from her family to my free clinic where I help unfortunate people who need my help and guidance she came home addicted to opiates after an life threatening car accident and was prescribed a common opiate analgesia her insurance refused to renew because she could go home for free treatment of the N.H.S she stayed out in L.A for an other 2 years her employment was ended due to her injuries and was sacked on medical needs. She had no money relying on family sending transfers to her and she could no longer afford prescribed drugs so she spent almost every penny she had. She inevitably had to find cheaper and different analgesia and found marijuana helped and was affordable. When her supply ran out and her dealers had none she was forced to buy opiate pain relief of black market dealers and the help she so desperately needed was 4,500 miles away she got addicted which prescribed or not will happen any way she was then driven to get them any way possible as pain, withdrawal, money, and no help from either goverment was there and was limited to 2 options get home get help or crime she picked crime as she did not could not tell family she got chaught by police she was immediately deported. She sued both governments for human rights and other breached laws on either side of the pond and the two judges in the US and UK both agreed as a western country humanitarian rights and obligated help should of been there no matter the country and Tue goverment are to blame for not policing medication cost and this war and the methods and methodology of both our countries is the undeniable result witch they city of supply then they should have help and funding and what is needed to replace what they are going to take away witch was in the first place caused by the goverments this is 3rd world politics and its the end user who suffers. I am treating this girl with cognitive behaviour and psychological behaviour routines and she is responding very well her farther informs me.
