Heavy drinking and the spread
of hepatitis C through intravenous drug use is behind a doubling in the
number of deaths from liver disease in England's West Midlands area between
1993 and 2000, and upsurged nationwide, according to a new study published
in the British Medical Journal. Alcohol-related fatal liver failures
have increased almost three-fold, researchers found.
The increase was particularly
high among Asian men, who may be genetically more susceptible to alcohol,
the researchers speculated. The study also suggested that the rise
in damage from IDU-related hepatitis C is a consequence of individual actions
taken two decades or more ago.
