US
Anti-Drug
Colonel
Pleads
Guilty
4/7/00
Colonel James Hiett has pled
guilty to "ignoring a felony" while serving as commander of US anti-narcotics
forces in Colombia. Hiett, it seems, failed to turn in his wife Laurie
who shipped packages containing over $700,000 worth of heroin, via the
US Embassy mail system, to addresses in Manhattan and Queens. She
is also alleged to have traveled back to New York at least twice to pick
up cash. Laurie Hiett, who is facing nine years on conspiracy charges,
initially told investigators that her husband had no knowledge of her activities.
She had also said that she mailed the packages for her civilian driver,
and that she didn't know what was in them.
