Under
Correctional
Supervision

5.9 million Americans are
currently under some form of criminal justice supervision -- either incarcerated,
on probation or parole -- according to a report issued this week (8/22)
by the Justice Department. The total represents an increase of more
than 163,000 people in the past year.
5.9 million represents 3%
of the adult population, or one out of every 34 American adults.
According to the report, 21% of those under supervision are women, compared
with 18% in 1990, and 35% are African American, up from 34% a decade ago.
