According to The Independent, one of the United Kingdom's largest daily newspapers, a forthcoming United Nations report shows that new areas of Afghanistan are being used for the cultivation of opium poppies, and that despite poor weather conditions, next year's crop will be one of the largest ever. The Taliban, who have gained control of over 90% of the country, had previously promised to eradicate poppies in exchange for promises of economic aid from UN "Drug Czar" Pino Arlacchi.
