George Soros, whose philanthropy, through the Open Society Institute
(of which The Lindesmith Center is part) is estimated at $350 million per
year, will donate $1 million to needle exchange programs through San Francisco's
Tides Foundation. The gift is believed to be the largest ever private donation
to such programs in the U.S.
