Take methadone? Talk here!

Hey people. Well this is great!!! I spend a good amount of time at www.atwatchdog.org (a pro methadone site) and a very good one at that --- but this is something new and I am really looking forward to checking this out and watching it grow. I am hoping anyone who takes takes the lifesaving drug known as methadone might feel compelled to stop by here and tap out their story perhaps -- or just to say say hello and make your voice heard. Ending the stigma which surrounds our medication is going to take lots of people doing lots of positive things for methadone and the people who take it; this is, perhaps, one small step in that direction. Methadone gave me the chance to save my own life ---- my story isn't unique --- there are thousands of you out there who can say the same thing .... I am hoping you will post here. Tolerance/Respect -- TWITCH

methadone

I AM A 34 YEAR OLD WIFE AND MOTHER OF A 12 TEAR OLD SON. I WAS INVOLVED IN A SERIOUS CAR ACCIDENT 2 YEARS AGO WITH MY SON WHO THANK GOD WAS NOT HURT. I WAS UNFORTUNEATLY MY RIGHT KNEE WAS TRAPPED UNDER THE STEERING WHEEL WICH SHATTERED THE UNDER SURFACE OF MY KNEE CAP. I WENT THRU ALOT OF THERAOY AND OTHER THINGS. I HAD A TOTAL OF 7 SURGERIES AND LOTS OF DIFFERENT PAIN MEDICATIONS(MORPHINE,VICODIN,PERCOCET ETC..) TO NAME A COUPLE. AFTER THE 7TH SURGERY IA HAD TO HAVE MY KNEECAP REMOVED WICH WAS VERY PAINFUL. AFTER HEALING FROM THAT SURGERY I HAD TO HAVE 3 MORE SURGERIES ON THE SAME KNEE. I ONCE AGAIN WAS PUT ON ALL KINDS OF MEDS. I WENT THRU A LONG PAINFUL AND STRESSFUL BATTLE BEFORE I WAS GIVEN METHADONE. TODAY I AM CURRENTLY ON METHADONE WITHOUT THIS MEDICATION I WOULD NOT BEABLE TO DO DAILY THINGS OBVIOUSLY I AM NOT WORKING DO TO MY DISABILITY, BUT EVERYDAY STUFF WAS A REAL PAINFUL THING FOR ME. I AM STILL AWAITING MY TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT DUE TO MY AGE A LOT OF DOCTORS WOULD NOT TREAT ME (PHYSICALLY AND EMOTIONALLY) MY SURGEON AND KNEW PRIMARY CARE BOTH DECIDED TOGETHER TO PUT ME ON THE METHADONE. I AM FINALLY GOING TO HAVE A TOTAL KNEE REPLACMENT WITHIN THE NEXT 30 DAYS. I KNOW MY STORY MAY NOT BE AS INTENSE AS OTHERS BUT I FELT THE NEED TO SHARE AND SUPPORT THE METHADONE AS A CHRONIC PAIN RELIEVER. LIKE I ALREADY SAID WITHOUT I WOULD BE CONFINED TO MY BED. AND A T 34 YEARS OLD WHO WANTS OR NEEDS THAT.

I am sorry to hear you had

I am sorry to hear you had to endure so much pain, I cannot understand how you feel because I wasn't in the same situation. I think you should be careful with methadone, it is after all a highly addictive drug and I don't personally approve his medical use. Having pain is hard enough, you don't have to get addicted too because of this.
Methadone detox

hi

hi all i just stopped by to say hey and i will be back in a week or so after my dental work, having 4 front top teeth pulled in the a.m. and i am very scared... will let you all know how it went...duchess

Be careful and know what you're getting in to before you start

I am not against Methadone use for pain management at all. I feel like I need to tell my story just to help raise awareness of the addictive qualities of the drug. I have always been very careful about keeping myself in check as far as not drinking too much etc. because addiction runs in my family. I've had tons of back issues over the last five years, taking Vicodin on a regular basis first and then ultimately switching to Methadone. It was my choice to give up Vicodin as I was REALLY liking it and when my doc recommended Methadone I was thrilled. After all, isn't this the drug they use to curb the side effects of people withdrawing from "bad" drugs such as heroin. How bad could it be?

Holy cow, you don't just get off of this stuff. After a year long batter of over indulging on the medication time and time again, enlisting the help of my parents (I'm a 45 yr old mother of two) to dole the drugs out etc. etc. etc. I finally quit cold turkey two weeks ago and am very glad I did. It's really sucked and had quite frankly, drained the life right out of me at times. I've got a very supportive spouse who understands on some level so he allows me my grumpy times ets. I also started a brand new job just a week before I quit and have been able (albeit with clenched fists) to go to work. It's helped having my mind on something besides mysel. I've had the runs like crazy but the worst thing is the sleep issue at this point.

If you're considering taking this drug, do so with caution and as prescribed. I know it's a God send when you hurt.

someone who cares

Methadone

I'll say a couple of things;
First of all, in response to the previous poster about climbing a flimsy ladder, let me tell whoever reads this my experience.

After years of all out war on my addiction issues I continued to fail until I finally began methadone maintenance with the notion of first getting an adequate dose. If you're going to go the methadone route, I suggest that you get on a dose that eliminates ALL withdrawal and ALL craving. Only then are you able to get it off your mind and get the more important issues like your life in order. Once your life is in order you can s-l-o-w-l-y titrate down. Those who say that methadone is so much worse to withdraw from didn't withdraw from it the right way; the advised way to withdraw is slowly over a period of long term - I've known many that took as much as three years or more to slowly titrate down to zero - all of them were able to do this outpatient while working a regular job. Something I could NEVER do kicking any other opiate.

Methadone shouldn't be treated lightly; it's a powerful opiate and a dangerous medication when not taken as prescribed. Like many medications there are other dangers in a percentage of people, you need to be careful and aware of the risks. It's not something to take 'for fun' that's for sure - but used as Dole, Nyswander and Kreek intended it to be used it's nothing less than miraculous. I can say without question that it saved my life.

As far as all the hype about "Methadone Kills" that is nothing but more of the same garbage from the same people. It's the War On Drugs that kills. What we need is a common sense approach to harm reduction and rehabilitation. We need treatment not jail.
