The Global Coalition for Alternatives to the Drug War!
Please distribute our press release.
The United Nations will hold the first-ever Special
Session of the General Assembly on Drugs (UNGASS), on June 8-10
1998 in New York. To ensure that proposals for drug policy reform are heard during this session, more than 90 organisations have recently united to form the
Global Coalition for Alternatives to the Drug War. For more information please read the introduction.
The coalition has written a declaration that will be widely distributed in the context of UNGASS. Organisations can join the coalition by signing the declaration. The coalition will engage in many coordinated activities aimed at highlighting the need for drug policy reform. We are planning a panel discussion to be held inside the UN on Tuesday June 9th. Furthermore, members of the coalition are invited to participate in the
This international event, which will take place in over 45 cities in 15 countries, will feature discussion forums, demonstrations, press conferences, street parties, seminars, concerts, a congress, exhibitions, petitions, and other types of events. As stated, a panel discussion is being planned inside the UN (see the info for New York). Note however that participation in the coalition does not itself imply endorsement of these events. Your organisation can help make the Global Coalition for Alternatives to the Drug War a success. Please join the coalition, co-sign the declaration with us, and, if possible, participate in the 1998 Global Days against the Drug War. In the weeks before UNGASS we will issue press releases with the names of all the organisations that have joined the coalition. See the list of member organisations of the Global Coalition for Alternatives to the Drug War. For more information read our newsletter. We collaborate with the International Coalition of NGOs, established by ENCOD. See their information about UNGASS. |
