A Vancouver man has been charged with smuggling millions of dollars worth of marijuana stashed in snow mobiles, inflatable boats and travel trailers into Alaska. The thirty-six year old was named in an indictment by a grand jury in anchorage. Four Alaskan citizens are also having their lives torn apart and destroyed by the IRS. The usual seizures and sales of confiscated property will cost them their home. The shipments were said to be in the 36-68 kilo range. This is supposed to be a big deal? The four men and one woman are charged with conspiring to import and distribute marijuana, laundering money and engaging in unlawful transactions with the money from the drug deals. What the hell is money laundering? As usual, the charges are half redundant. It sounds like they're doing a better job if they can lay the same charge in several ways. None of the accused are in custody. They do, however, face between five and forty years in prison. This story appeared in Today's (Thursday, Jan 17 '08) Province newspaper. There was also a small article about four men that used a shotgun on another man in a temple parking lot in a drug dispute. The fellow was released from hospital, last I heard. I guess a shooting just isn't interesting in Vancouver any more. I can remember when a drug shooting was front page news. It was so rare that the public was outraged. Now it's just part of daily life in town. And the drug war goes on and on.
