Job openings at the Marijuana Policy Project

The Marijuana Policy Project has four job openings in our headquarters in Washington, D.C.:

  • Office administrator/bookkeeper

The office administrator/bookkeeper manages MPP's main office, does all bookkeeping, and assists the executive director. This position is an excellent opportunity to gain exposure to all aspects of operating a fast-paced grassroots lobbying organization. The successful candidate will be a highly organized self-starter with excellent written and verbal communication skills, meticulous attention to detail, and a professional demeanor and appearance. Experience with accounting, bookkeeping, or QuickBooks is strongly preferred.

  • Director of State Policies

The director of State Policies manages MPP's grassroots and direct lobbying efforts in all state legislatures, as well as managing MPP's State Policies Department staff. The overarching goal of the position is to pass medical marijuana legislation and/or marijuana regulation legislation in state legislatures while preventing bad bills from being enacted. The position requires strong political instincts, solid political or government relations experience, and exceptional management skills.

  • Membership & Events fellowship:

The membership & events fellow assists MPP's Membership and Grants & VIP Outreach departments. The Grants & VIP Outreach Department coordinates MPP's special events and manages MPP's grants program, which dispenses $1.5 million annually in support of efforts that foster measurable changes in marijuana policy. The Membership Department coordinates MPP's fundraising, conducts donor research, oversees communications with members, maintains MPP's member database, processes donations, and submits grant applications. The fellowship begins in late August or early September, pays $9 per hour, and requires a minimum four-month commitment.

  • State Policies internship:

The State Policies intern works in MPP's State Policies Department, which is dedicated to reforming marijuana laws on the state level through direct lobbying and by inspiring lobbying at the grassroots level by individuals and allied organizations. This is an unpaid, part-time internship with class credit available. Interns work 16-20 hours per week and have the chance to play a responsible role in a successful nonprofit organization.

Job Opportunity: Deputy Director, International Harm Reduction Development Program, Open Society Institute

The Open Society Institute works to build vibrant and tolerant democracies whose governments are accountable to their citizens. On a local level, OSI implements a range of initiatives to advance justice, education, public health, and independent media. At the same time, OSI builds alliances across borders and continents on issues such as corruption and freedom of information. OSI places a high priority on protecting and improving the lives of marginalized people and communities. Investor and philanthropist George Soros in 1993 created OSI as a private operating and grantmaking foundation to support his foundations in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Those foundations were established, starting in 1984, to help countries make the transition from communism. OSI has expanded the activities of the Soros foundations network to encompass the United States and more than 60 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Each Soros foundation relies on the expertise of boards composed of eminent citizens who determine individual agendas based on local priorities. Founded in 1995, the International Harm Reduction Development Program (IHRD) of the Open Society Institute (OSI) works to reduce HIV and other harms related to injecting drug use, and to press for policies that reduce stigmatization of illicit drug users and protect their human rights. IHRD, which has supported more than 200 harm reduction programs in 26 countries of Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, and Asia, bases its activities on the understanding that people unable or unwilling to abstain from drug use can make positive changes to protect their health and the health of others. Since 2001, IHRD has prioritized advocacy to expand availability and quality of needle exchange, drug treatment, and treatment for HIV; to reform discriminatory policies and practices; and to increase the opportunities for political engagement by people who use drugs and who are living with HIV. The IHRD Deputy Director is supervised by the program director, and carries substantial responsibility for coordination of four areas: program management, policy and advocacy, grantmaking, and finance and budgets. Responsibilities in the area of program management include directly supervising the work of three program officers and two administrative staff in areas including community organizing, technical assistance to harm reduction services, NGO strengthening, and policy/advocacy efforts; directing IHRD's approaches to external funders, and overseeing the reporting for and compliance with grants from international donors; establishing and maintaining linkages with IHRD partners including government representatives, health and social care providers, community groups, and international organizations; participating in the management team of the Open Society Institute Network Public Health Program, and representing IHRD as required at meetings of OSI, the Soros network, and at international, regional and national conferences; coordinateing conferences and expert consultations related to drug use and HIV; overseeing development of strategic planning, and reporting on work achieved and planned; and supervising research and technical assistance projects. Responsibilities in the area of policy and advocacy include helping guide implementation of policy and advocacy initiatives and related strategies at the international, regional and national level throughout the Eastern Europe and Asia; assisting national foundations in the Soros Network with development, implementation and evaluation of strategies on harm reduction; and identifying and managing a team of international consultants working with IHRD to advance policy objectives. Responsibilities in the area of grantmaking include developing and overseeing calls for proposals or grant competitions to support policy initiatives; and managing the review process, of proposals, grant reports, and identification of expert committees. Responsibilities in the area of finance and budgets include producing IHRD's annual budget, reports for on spending and priorities, and working with program staff on individual program budgets; monitoring financial allocations & general program expenditures; and tracking and ensuring staff compliance with OSI financial guidelines, accounting procedures and reporting requirements. Qualifications include a minimum of 5 years relevant work experience in issues related to public policy, human rights, drug use and/or HIV; a commitment to harm reduction principles, advocacy and civil society engagement; a Doctorate or Masters degree (or equivalent) in law, health, medicine, sociology, or relevant field; solid experience in staff, program and grant management, preferably in international public health; excellent spoken and written English, and presentation skills (Russian language fluency preferred, though not required); and the willingness to travel internationally as required. Job Opportunity: Drug Policy Alliance, Deputy Director, San Francisco Office

This position reports to the Director, Drug Policy Alliance California (based in Los Angeles) and directs DPA's San Francisco office. The Deputy Director serves as the primary strategist for DPA's Model City initiative at the local level in San Francisco. The Deputy Director also collaborates with DPA's other California offices (in Sacramento and Los Angeles) in support of DPA's California legislative agenda, and with DPA's other "Model City" initiative directors in Washington, DC, and New York, NY. The Deputy Director, DPA California-San Francisco serves as DPA's primary spokesperson in San Francisco and is responsible for cultivating and maintaining relationships with local politicians, individual and foundation funders, partner organizations, media, DPA members, and other stakeholders. This is an unpaid internship for 10-20 hours per week.

Job Listing: Executive Director, Access Works!

Access Works! is a nonprofit organization providing harm reduction services including a syringe exchange. AW's mission is to improve the health and reduce the harm to people impacted by the use of drugs through support, intervention, education, and disease prevention. Access Works! provides services to individuals in the Minneapolis/St. Paul Metropolitan Area and is based in an inner city Minneapolis neighborhood. The organization is comprised of five staff plus volunteers. The executive director is responsible for the overall direction and leadership of the staff and agency, and for the planning and implementation of all programs.

MPP is gearing up to run TV and radio ads to change the way people think about marijuana and marijuana users. Many people sent in great ideas for ads, and now MPP's looking for professionals in the video production industry who want to work pro bono — or for low cost — on the ad campaign. Job Opportunity: Executive Director, Project SAFE, Philadelphia

Project SAFE is an all-volunteer grassroots organization providing advocacy and support for women working in street prostitution. SAFE's mission is to promote human rights-based public health among women working in prostitution on the street in Philadelphia. SAFE is an organization dedicated to ensuring the health, safety and survival of women on the street by providing advocacy, education and support using a harm reduction model. SAFE seeks to reduce the spread of HIV, hepatitis C and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among working women, promote health and safety by arming women with relevant information and resources, and connect women to programs and services which are appropriate to their needs and interests. Sought after is a brave and energetic person who is dedicated to harm reduction philosophy and social justice to take on the position of Executive Director in this new and exciting grassroots organization. The ED will be responsible for the management, direction, and coordination of all activities and will maintain primary responsibility for fundraising, program development and evaluation, program oversight and management, staff supervision and implementation of SAFE's strategic plan. The ED will report to the Board of Directors, and will supervise a staff of three volunteers. The ED's salary is guaranteed for the first three months. The successful candidate will be expected to begin fundraising immediately in order to raise her/his own salary as well as to maintain the program's basic operating expenses. Primary responsibilities in the area of financial management include working with the staff and the board in preparing a budget, and seeing that the organization operates within budget guidelines; ensuring that adequate funds are available to permit the organization to carry out its work; serving as the primary contact for financial management for the government, foundation, corporate and individual donors; and providing regular financial reports to the Board of Directors.
