Police Discover World’s Largest Marijuana Plants
Drug enforcement officers never tire of their overpowering compulsion to exaggerate marijuana seizures to the point of absurdity. Again and again, we’ve caught police making ludicrous claims that contradict basic math and science.
The latest example comes from California, where local narcotics officers found some large marijuana plants and tried to frame it as some sort of unbelievable shocker:
That all sounds very exciting and newsworthy, except for one thing: marijuana plants don’t yield 10 pounds. They just don’t. That’s crazy and wrong.
To illustrate how absurd this is, I contacted Chris Conrad, a court-qualified cannabis expert and author of Cannabis Yields and Dosage. Here’s what Chris had to say:
It is almost amusing to picture officers standing around a bunch of big plants issuing arbitrary clueless declarations about the garden’s quality and yield. They have absolutely no idea what they’re talking about. It’s like asking a mugger to appraise jewelry. It might be funny if it weren’t for the fact that these spontaneous, incompetent assessments are used at trial to influence how long non-violent offenders will spend behind bars.

Some of the plants were 7 feet tall or higher. Most averaged only 5 feet in height but had a circumference of about 12 feet and could have produced about 10 pounds each of marijuana, said Hudson, who called it "some of the highest quality marijuana currently available."
It would take about 2,000 normal-size plants to produce an equivalent amount, he said. [Appeal Democrat]

Probably they would end up getting about 3-4 pounds of actual bud from a plant that size, depending on how well it is manicured, plus more than that as leaf that could be converted into hash or edibles. Remember that the police use the "bud-leaf-seed" version of cannabis, whereas the actual market is for bud, not leaf or seeds. So cops almost always think there is twice as much 'marijuana' there as does the grower.
I was just looking at some big plants in Oregon for a collective, and they claimed 5 pounds per plant, but I think that included the shake, which they said they give away to indigent patients. Visually they looked like 3 pound plants to me, so the implication is that they toss out the fan leaf but keep the bud leaf and trim for patients. That would explain how they could come to 5 pounds.
I've never had anyone claim to have gotten 10 pounds from a plant, but quite a few people have boasted about getting between 2 and 5 pounds of bud from one. I haven't had the pleasure of sitting in on the manicure and weighing to see it for myself, yet.
Cops often inflate the weight of their yield by using the fresh weight instead of the dry weight of the plants, BTW, so the most typical inflation is 400%; in other words, their alleged 10 pounds is most likely to weigh about 2.5 pounds, based on the typical cop exaggeration.

7 foot plants of healthy marijuana is actually a little sad considering out of my 14 plants half indica and half sativa i have 2 13 foot plants and the rest are all 8 to 12 ft tall! I am hoping to recieve 5 pounds atleast per plant seing that my last harvest on 11 footers was 3 lbs. With good home made beach grabbed kelp extracts and bone meal along with potassium silicate and black strap mulasses, i can see a 20 foot plant being possible started just early enough and with perfect sun and greenhouse environment alot is possible most ppl think is not.. just a little dose of reality california has soo much potential most just dont know to use it..

Well, damn, ain't that ironic...?!?! They want to bury the plants, but the plants were already buried perfectly fine. With their roots in the ground and leaves sticking up in the air. What a beautiful sight it was to see all that healthy beautiful marijuana, and such a sad one to see all that weed disgraced and stepped on like a common dandelion...so sad...
Profit motive
It's all about profit motive. My God, these plants are so big and so potent. Surely, this justifies even more money in next years budget than we've already inflated it. It's sad how many readers are going to be suckered in by this nonsense. Plus, the outcry for even harsher penalties. Hey, these hyper inflated statements could be used to justify further restricting the amount of cannabis medical marijuana patients could grow. When the seeds for this super strain of plant hits the market. Imagine how much more productive illicit cannabis growers could be. If this kind of talk doesn't encourage people to grow illicit cannabis nothing will. Whey to go guys. You just gave decent people another incintive to break the law, and the beat goes on.

Medical Marijuana
It seems to me that the police were quite quick to conclude that this doesn't involve medical marijuana. We should all remember that police have not only been known to exaggerate in these scenarios, but they've been known to commit plenty of perjury in court during drug cases, steal plenty of cash from drug dealers stashes at busts, etc. There may well be plenty of medicinal marijuana users short on medicine.

I had never thought of this. I had always thought that people are considered dealers if they're caught with a certain amount of marijuana because mostly, all the marijuana i've seen in my life is buds. But if someone is caught with plants instead of buds they really could be considered dealers for no reason if the law makes no difference between buds and the rest of the plant matter. Also, I had never thought (and I can't believe I've never thought of this), if someone is caught with a couple onces of regular, cheap weed, they would be prosecuted exactly in the same way as someone caught with the same amount of a really potent, expensive weed, which would obviously be good for many times the amount of doses. The way these laws are written and enforced is even more nonsensical and more unfair than I had even realized.

This was the most ludicrous exaggeration of the whole thing! Who is he kidding? It would take 2,000 plants to produce 10lbs. of bud? Assuming a yield of 1oz.. per plant, 2k plants would produce more like 125lbs. of bud!

The "Expert" is just as bad.....
Hitting 5-10lbs per plant is certainly nothing new in the field. I find it interesting to question a collective stating expected yields, and have an "expert" state it "includes shake", and also that hasn't been party to post harvest...(hang,dry,trim....)
Quite a few people hitting the 5+ mark with right prep and strains...ie: Getting them out larger, earlier, good holes, good prep, and constant feed.
Many examples in the community of such "Tree grows". (As plant count is a risk factor, trend for many years now has been to grow fewer, larger plants to fall under certain state and federal sentencing levels determined by plant count but still hit yield targets.)
I find such an "expert" commentary just as disturbing as LE's stab's in the dark...

...before questioning his expertise. Chris is describing what is typical based on his experience. The fact that some people have achieved better outcomes is not surprising. The point is that it isn't typical and police shouldn't arbitrarily assume a 10 pound yield from a large plant. These were indoor plants we're talking about.

1- Yes, a plant can easily yield 10 lb outdoors, some that are grown commercialy with special super large HID's indoors can easily yield ten pounds as well. It's not some myth or anything. But it comes with the territory of the experienced/knowledgable grower. SO chances are, it probably wasn't, but could have been.
2-2000 Plants for ten pounds is retarded, if if was those kind of numbers on average no one would want to grow.

I annually grow 5-8 lbs per 5-12 ft plant.
The last 3 yrs have brought in a lower 3-5 lb ratio due to the ongoing drought.

They took my plants
i started these plants for personal use to help with my chronic pain and other pains in my joints and mumb feet they grew in stair steps from 18 imches to 5 feet there was 4/5 in mid flowering stage a helocopter flew over and they came and took my plants in OHIO they did not arrest me just took the plants i am wondering this is the first time doing this , i though it was legal for personal use 4/5 plant .i need some advice on what happens next.
