New Offers: "After Legalization" E-Books, and "High Price" Signed for Reduced Price

https://stopthedrugwar.org/files/after-legalization.jpg
Dear StoptheDrugWar.org supporter:

For the first time ever we are offering an "E-Book" as our latest membership premium. The book is "After Legalization: Understanding the Future of Marijuana Policy," by John Walker of Firedoglake. Read our review of the book, by Drug War Chronicle editor Phil Smith, here. Donate $12 or more to StoptheDrugWar.org, and we will email you a code and instructions for downloading After Legalization (epub or mobi format).

We also continue to offer author-signed copies of Dr. Carl Hart's "High Price: A Neuroscientist's Journey of Self-Discovery That Challenges Everything You Know About Drugs and Society" -- now for a reduced minimum donation amount of $35. (Author-signed copies will be sent for as long as current stocks last. After they run out, we reserve the right to send unsigned copies if necessary.)

For a minimum donation of $40, you can request both High Price and After Legalization. For any premium order, make sure to specify your request using our donation form's drop-down menu, or use the comment box for any special instructions.

Although we've asked for the above-listed minimum donation amounts to qualify for these gifts with your membership, I also hope you'll donate more if you can afford to. Things have changed in the drug reform funding scene, making our organization more dependent on membership to continue our programs.

Also note that donations to StoptheDrugWar.org can be tax-deductible, supporting our educational work, or non-deductible, supporting our lobbying work. (Note that selecting any gift items reduces the amount of your donation that is deductible -- which with a smaller gift amount can be most of it.) Donations can be made by credit card or PayPal at http://stopthedrugwar.org/donate, or sent by mail to P.O. Box 9853, Washington, DC 20016. If you are donating by check, please make it payable to DRCNet Foundation (if tax-deductible) or Drug Reform Coordination Network (if not deductible). If you wish to donate stock, the information to give your brokerage is Ameritrade, (800) 669-3900), DTC#0188, and account number 781926492 for tax-deductible gifts or 864663500 for non-deductible gifts -- please make sure to contact us if donating in this way.

Thank you for supporting drug policy reform at this time of amazing opportunity but continuing challenges. Working together we can and will change things for the better -- in fact we already are.

Sincerely,

David Borden, Executive Director

Help Us Legalize Marijuana in Washington, DC!

It's nothing less than electrifying when a chapter of a global saga is being written in your backyard. It is undeniably your turn to stand up, organize and make your mark.

The folks behind DC Cannabis Campaign (DCMJ) have advanced Voter Initiative 71, which will legalize possession and home growing of marijuana—hopefully paving the way for the DC Council to enact sane, sensible "tax and regulate" measures like the ones currently being implemented in Colorado and Washington.

It will add to the momentum of battles now underway in Oregon and Alaska.

It will advance the credibility of the anti-prohibitionists who want to set our country free and make this a national issue that no one can ignore any longer.

Help Us Legalize Marijuana in DC

As a DC-based organization, this initiative is close to our hearts. As an organizational steering committee member we have committed to delivering 5,000 of the signatures needed to get I-71 on the ballot and then to work for its passage. We need donors and volunteers to deliver on our pledge and spread the good fight in our corner of the world.

There are a few ways you should help now:

DONATE: Visit our donation page to make a generous donation supporting the DC Cannabis Campaign. Please select the option to make a non-deductible donation supporting our lobbying work, and indicate in the notes field that it is for the DC campaign, Initiative 71. If you can afford it, please return to the donation page to make a second gift (tax-deductible or non-deductible) supporting our ongoing work that makes this outreach possible, or indicate in the notes field how much of your gift is meant for the campaign vs. our organization.

VOLUNTEER: If you live in the DC-area, please contact StoptheDrugWar.org and become part of the campaign's volunteer force. We're going to join DCMJ out on the streets, inform our fellow DCers about the campaign, gather signatures and help Initiative 71 pass. Please include "DCMJ volunteer" in the subject line. We'll be in touch soon thereafter.

This is an exciting time. We're not a voice in the wilderness anymore. Unprecedented gains are within our reach—even in the nation's capital.

Will you join us?

Sincerely,

David Borden, Executive Director

Will You Rejoin the Fight and Keep Our Writers Working in 2014?

First of all, thank you! You're one of the incredibly generous donors who have helped us force drug policy reform into the national conversation. Would you have believed five years ago that recreational marijuana use would be legal in two US states and the federal government would start rolling back mandatory minimum sentencing?

It's been an incredible few years. During those years, you've kept our writers fed so they can craft the stories that inform and inspire in the Drug War Chronicle. You've helped our lean and dedicated staff roll back draconian laws that deny college aid to kids convicted of drug crimes.

It's been an exciting time, but not without its challenges. Small- and medium-sized donors are our lifeblood. We exist because readers like you decided to partner with us to create a vital, informed counter-narratives to the injustices and excesses of the drug war. Because of that dependence on lots of small donors, the economic downturn of 2008 presented a significant setback from which we're still trying to recover.

Will you rejoin the fight and keep our small, dedicated staff on the front lines during this critical and promising phase of the battle? Drug policy reform is at a major crossroads. And so are we. We're asking our supporters to help keep StoptheDrugWar.org funded in 2014.

See What We've Done Together

  • The Drug War Chronicle newsletter reaches over a million people a year on our web site, tens of thousands of people by email, and many more through other outlets because of our open-rights republishing policy. Our web site in total reaches millions. Every story adds to the drumbeat of common sense that is turning prohibitionists into doubters and encouraging those on the fence to join reform efforts.
  • We created a bully pulpit that helps local activists across the country -- both by inspiring them to create change and giving them a louder megaphone for their efforts. Leading activists in the movement often tell us they got involved in drug policy because of our web site and email list.
  • Our work launched a successful initiative to amend a law that took financial aid away from students convicted of drug offenses, and also launched Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP), an organization still active today on college campuses across the US.

Why We Need You Back

In an era where too much of the national debate is still framed by prohibitionist dogma, our small, dedicated and passionate staff keep anti-prohibitionists on the cutting edge of legislation and policy. And you drive it all: Providing vital information for reform advocates -- locally, nationally, and globally -- and amplifying their efforts for audiences they couldn't have hoped to reach otherwise. Our mission to provide the best information available on the global drug war and its costs is critical to the national and global efforts to end it.

But because of the economy and other big changes, we can't do it any longer without you. Without you, our small and prolific team of experts will have to pack it up and go home. While we know how to run lean and live modestly, we can't continue to run as close to empty as we've been doing lately. And so we're asking for your partnership and your support once again.

Despite some progress, the mainstream media continues to be a depressingly dependable source of fear-based misinformation in the drug debate much of the time. That's why it's up to reformers like us to fund and make their own media -- a drumbeat sounding clear and true against the fear and misinformation, turning a few more heads every year and normalizing rational debate.

Please Help Fund Our Editorial Staff for 2014

We ask that you support our campaign by making a donation. It's easy, secure, and it will give us a vital boost in the new year and further what we have all built together -- an advocacy journalism and activism outlet that is a valuable resource for other reformers across the nation.

Advancing information, research and informed argument in the national debate is critical to not just marijuana legalization, but ending the drug war on all fronts. America is at a crossroads -- and so are we at StoptheDrugWar.org. Will you rejoin us, preserve what we have built and keep driving towards a more just and prosperous horizon?

I'm Back In! I Will Help Fund StoptheDrugWar.org for 2014.

Stopping the Drug War Means Winning the Information War.

As a subscriber to StoptheDrugWar.org, you know that this is an exciting and critical time for those who believe that prohibition and the global drug war in its current form need to end.

You're learning about the state-level revolt against federal marijuana laws, how the prerogatives of the drug war corrupt local police departments, and the real, nuanced policy story behind the headlines.

Stories are important. With each one we tell, we chip away at the prohibitionists' decades-long stranglehold on the drug policy debate. Things are starting to change. And we need your help to keep the momentum.

Why It's Critical to Support our "Unfinished Business" Campaign Today.

In an era where so much of the national debate is still framed by prohibition-based thinking, our small, dedicated and passionate staff keep anti-prohibitionists on the cutting edge of legislation and policy. Our platform serves as a vital information source for reform efforts -- locally, nationally, and globally -- and amplifies their efforts for audiences they couldn't have hoped to reach otherwise. Our mission to provide the best information available on the global drug war and its costs is critical to the national and global efforts to end it.

But we need your help to keep going strong in 2014. You can help our small and prolific team of experts pay their bills so they can stay focused on the great content that brings light to critical prohibition issues.

The mainstream media has been a depressingly dependable source of fear-based misinformation in the drug debate, predictably amplifying the talking points of those whose livelihoods depend on the expansion of the wasteful, corrupt and unjust global drug war.

That's why it's the duty of reformers to fund and make their own media -- a drumbeat that sounds clear and true against the fear and misinformation, turning a few more heads every year and slowly normalizing rational debate.

Drug War Chronicle needs your support!
Dear friend of drug policy reform,

StoptheDrugWar.org needs your support more than ever before to continue our work of getting the word out online for the drug policy reform movement, building the movement, and providing this crucial informational tool that reformers around the world use in their work every day. I ask your support at this time with the most generous donation you can afford to enable this newsletter to continue.

In recent weeks we've announced our latest offer for members donating $50 or more, author-signed copies of three important new books. Phil has now completed reviews of all three of these works, most recently NYT bestselling author Doug Fine's -- Too High to Fail: Cannabis and the New Green Economic Revolution, as well as Marc Mauer and Sabrina Jones's Race to Incarcerate: A Graphic Retelling and Carl Hart's High Price: A Neuroscientist's Journey of Self-Discovery That Challenges Everything You Know About Drugs and Society.

To donate, and to order any of these or other items we offer, please use our online donation form at http://stopthedrugwar.org/donate, or scroll down for info on donating by mail. We are asking donations of $50 or more for a signed copy of any one or these books, $95 or more for signed copies of any two, or $135 or more for signed copies of all three. (If more than 25 people order the books by the time you place your order, we will ask the authors if they're willing to sign more. If that can't be worked out, we'll contact you and offer to make different arrangements, whether for a full or partial refund or to send different items.)

Now, $50 is a little more than we've asked for such items in the past, and of course they can be ordered online or purchased in a bookstore for less. Things have changed in the drug reform funding scene, making our organization more dependent on membership to continue our programs -- I hope you'll choose to support us at this time. Note that we continue to offer a range of books, videos, and StoptheDrugWar.org gift items with donations of as little as $7 -- visit our donation form to see the full list.

Box 18402, Washington, DC 20036.

Thank you for standing with us to stop the drug war's cruelties and meet the opportunity this time offers to make a brighter future. As recent events show, time and the truth are on our side!
