Drug policy reform faces challenges and opportunities.
- States continue to enact medical marijuana laws, most recently Delaware [10], the 16th medical marijuana state; Vermont [11], a new medical marijuana dispensary state; and Maryland [12], with a new necessity defense bill that will study medical marijuana dispensaries.
- Nationwide support for legalizing marijuana is nearing 50 percent [13], and Congress will take up a legalization bill this year [14].
- States including Georgia [15], Oklahoma [16], Florida [17], Kentucky, Delaware, Ohio [18] and many others [19] are reducing drug sentences or considering it.
But the forces of prohibition aren't sitting still.
- US Attorneys [20] and Montana's legislature [21] are pushing back against medical marijuana.
- A historic though partial reduction in crack cocaine sentences passed by Congress last year remains not retroactive [22], and draconian sentencing bills [23] continue to pop up.
- Despite the horrific, continuing violence drug prohibition has inflicted on Mexico [24], leaders continue to duck the issue [25] and suppress debate [26].
