SEATTLE, WASHINGTON -- In a landmark article in the Journal of Opioid Management, University of Washington researcher Sunil Aggarwal and colleagues document 33 U.S. controlled clinical trials published from 1971 to 2009 confirming that marijuana is a safe, effective medicine for specific medical conditions.
Under federal law, marijuana is classified as a Schedule I drug, defining it as having high potential for abuse, unsafe for use even under medical supervision, and lacking currently accepted medical uses in the U.S. "In fact," Aggarwal and colleagues write, "nearly all of the 33 published controlled clinical trials conducted in the United States have shown significant and measurable benefits in subjects receiving the treatment." Additionally, the paper documents the growing acceptance of the therapeutic use of marijuana among organized medicine groups and estimates that "in 2008, approximately 7,000 American physicians have made such authorizations for a total of approximately 400,000 patients."
Regarding abuse and safety issues, Aggarwal et al. write that withdrawal symptoms -- a classic symptom of drug dependence -- are notably absent from the published trials, while "the vast majority of reported adverse events were not serious ... It is clear that as an analgesic, cannabis is extremely safe with minimal toxicity."
Unfortunately, the article continues, ignorance regarding marijuana remains widespread in the medical community. "There remains a near complete absence of education about cannabinoid medicine in any level of medical training," Aggarwal writes.
"This is arguably the most thorough review of the literature on medical marijuana since the Institute of Medicine report over a decade ago, with a trove of data that wasn't available to the IOM," said Rob Kampia, executive director of the Marijuana Policy Project. "It is simply incomprehensible that a medicine that is so clearly safe and effective remains banned from medical use by federal law and the laws of 37 states."
The article, "Medicinal Use of Cannabis in the United States: Historical Perspectives, Current Trends, and Future Directions," is available at http://tinyurl.com/m9oo44. A complete list of the 33 U.S. clinical trials is available from Sunil Aggarwal at sunila@uw.edu or 206-375-3785.
With more than 27,000 members and 100,000 e-mail subscribers nationwide, the Marijuana Policy Project is the largest marijuana policy reform organization in the United States. MPP believes that the best way to minimize the harm associated with marijuana is to regulate marijuana in a manner similar to alcohol. For more information, please visit http://MarijuanaPolicy.org.

The pharmaceutical companies have no cancer blocking medicines,so the government can't claim that legal medicines are available.
2.Here are 33 clinical studies, showing medical applications of marijuana, and they refuse to even allow the tests required by the FDA to approve marijuana
as a medicine. Any one that has ever smoked, ingested or vaporized too much marijuana knows of the safety of the herb, and no amount of jail time or seizure of their property will ever convince them that it is a dangerous drug.
3.The Attorney General announced on Feb 28,2009 that the federal government would no longer use Justice Department resources to prosecute any states legal medical marijuana dispensaries. It has been 7 month's and they have not spoken of it or clarified and published the guidelines for medical marijuana dispensaries, and it was in June that the budget committee asked for clarification so that the new laws could be enacted and budgeting could be adjusted to accommodate the new policy. The Department of Justice still has not done that. And the raids continue. Although you can bet some of the raids were on fronts for entrepreneurs using a medical dispensary to just sell marijuana, too patients and anyone that wants it,the courts will have to decide which of them are legitimate or not,and too second guess whether it was a front or not is impossible.
4. Alaska did decriminalize marijuana, and the federal government brought so much pressure on them for it,they had to reverse it to receive their federal
funding, and not because of increased youth use as claimed by the ONDCP and the anti-drug cartels.
Although the losses incurred by the bureaucracies, whose budgets will be reduced by legalization, the greatest losses will be incurred by the pharmaceutical companies, and they are the largest contributors to our elected legislators election funds. They are the strongest lobbies in our
political system,so most of your senators and representatives are bought and paid for before they even take their oath.
Any senator or representative that refuses to allow legalization of medical marijuana, regardless of scientific studies and clinical tests, just because the
ONDCP or any of it's bureaucratic empire, are basing their decision on an agency that is required to lie about marijuana's medical applications and are allowing people too contract cancer at a 62% greater rate than they would if they smoked, ingested,or vaporized marijuana in it's natural form.
All of our legislators have expressed anger and resentment that a terrorist was "traded for oil" and yet they "trade" our health and allow people to die of cancers and/or spend their life savings trying to treat cancers with the pharmaceutical chemicals and procedures provided by Big Pharmacy.
They are now trying to reform health care, wouldn't the possible reduction of cancer and the reduction of treatment costs and expense not be a health reform. In all their "health plans",they have not offered any reduction in what Big Pharmacy charges you.
The pharmaceutical companies are trying to develop medicines from marijuana that treat cancer,by isolating the exact compounds from marijuana, but so far have been unsuccessful. But statistical studies show that the plant already reduces cancer risks. The researchers state that they don't know why or how it does it,but it does. Other clinical studies have shown the process works, but they can't just isolate and synthesize the compounds and produce a "safe medicine" so far.
Please send your elected legislators the above article and the article on the cancer blocking attributes and if they send you a letter back, with any refusal based on ONDCP"s claims,or because marijuana is a Schedule I drug, put it on every site you can,so we the voters can remove these terrorists from our government:
Dear Friend:
Thank you for contacting me regarding the medical use of marijuana. I welcome your thoughts and comments on this issue.
Currently, marijuana is classified in the Schedule I category under the Controlled Substances Act. These substances have no accepted medical use in the United States and have a high potential for abuse, which legally restricts them from being used for any reason, including medicinal purposes.
Researchers have found marijuana use can adversely affect brain activity and the respiratory system, lead to increases in heart rate and blood pressure, and impair critical skills related to attention, memory, and learning. In addition, the harmful chemical in marijuana, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), has been linked to low birth weight and impaired motor development in children whose mother's used marijuana. While I am supportive of a patient's right to pursue all legally available options for medical treatment, I therefore am opposed to any effort legalizing the use of marijuana.
I appreciate hearing from you and hope you will not hesitate to keep in touch on any issue of concern to you.
Sincerely,
Kay Bailey Hutchison
United States Senator
