Al colaborar con una red de integrantes de la NACDL, organizaciones filiadas y aliados, el director promoverá iniciativas estaduales de políticas en materia de justicia penal. Los deberes generales incluyen: respaldar y entrenar a los integrantes de la red; proporcionar auxilio directo a iniciativas estaduales de reforma; coordinar y construir coaliciones entre organizaciones nacionales y estaduales; organizar conferencias y reuniones; hacer presión y atestar ante entidades legislativas; facilitar el reparto de informaciones y recursos entre militantes en distintos estados; relaciones mediáticas; y fomentar materiales e informes sobre políticas.

Los postulantes aptos tendrán experiencia en la defensa de cuestiones de políticas en materia de justicia penal, de preferencia en el ámbito estadual; vasto conocimiento de las cuestiones de la justicia penal; la capacidad de trabajar colaborativamente; y buenas aptitudes de redacción. Se da preferencia a un diploma en derecho, pero no se lo exige. Se solicita disponibilidad para viajes. Ubicación conveniente en el centro. Sueldo y beneficios competitivos con organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro legales.
