Video: Orange County Seniors Demand Medical Marijuana Access

This video by "Drug Crazy" author Mike Gray is from Orange County, California -- not a liberal bastion, but medical marijuana has been state law there for over 12 years. Senior citizens are calling for access to medical marijuana, local authorities are sympathetic, and advocates are willing help. But they can't find a landlord willing to rent to them, presumably because of threats by the US DEA to use asset forfeiture laws to take the property away.

Along with the sheer barbarism of these federal policies, the video also hints at what may be the largest tragedy, people who because of those policies never find out that marijuana could have helped them.

Drug War Issues Medical Marijuana

Residents of Orange County,

Residents of Orange County, NY also demand it

That's the tragedy all right, people not getting NEEDED medicine

and I can't think of a better word for it than barbarism either. Their utterly irrational hatred for recreational cannabis is so out of control, they gladly tell desperately ill patients to go to hell without a quiver of conscience. I think it's backfiring on them too. Any halfway reasonable person can see they've lost it on medicinal cannabis, so why should anyone believe them about recreational cannabis either?

Michigan Republican "Compassion"

Medicinal cannabis is being targeted in Michigan.

The overwhelming 2/3 majority decision of Michigan voters is under assault from Michigan Senate Republicans. It seems they find democracy distasteful and are engineering the reversal of the people's compassionate decision to allow patients access to natural medicine. I thought you'd want to look at this.

Here they are. Now get to work. We want these bills killed now OR we want immediate hearings. This must be nipped in the bud (forgive the pun). SB 616, 617 & 618 will eviscerate the MI Med MJ program. We will lose what we fought so hard to win if we don’t rise up enmass and tell these old white guys that we are mad as hell and we are not going to be kicked around anymore.

(Links are to complete texts. See below for relevant sections of the bills.)

Requires prescription rather than recommendation. Only FDA approved drugs may be prescribed so this means there will be NO doctor certifications. Program is dead.

http://www.legislature.mi.gov/documents/2009-2010/billintroduced/Senate/...

Requires medical mj be distributed exclusively by pharmacies. Pharmacies may only dispense FDA approved drugs so this means there will be NO legal source of medicine. Program is dead.

http://www.legislature.mi.gov/documents/2009-2010/billintroduced/Senate/...

Stipulates the medical marijuana may be grown only by a maximum of 10 farms. That means patients and caregivers can no longer cultivate medicine. Program as designed and approved by voters is dead.

Coincidentally, Senator Kuiper’s family business is a large plant nursery in Holland. Perhaps we misread him all along. He’s not opposed to med mj per se, just doesn’t want any competition. The Kuiper’s family—between the various brothers and sisters and nieces and nephews involved in the plant nursery business--could suck up 5 of the 10 licenses on their own.

Patients will no longer be allowed to possess 2.5 oz of medicine. Instead, they can only possess medicine which has been dispensed by a pharmacy and pharmacies are prohibited by federal law from dispensing any medical marijuana at all.

I am ashamed to learn that my own Senator, Ron Jelinek, is a co-sponsor of this bill. I will be visiting Mr. Jelinek’s office next week.

Never go to bed angry. I’ll be up all night tonight.

Here is a list of contact info for sponsors of SB 616, 617 & 618. Do it today because no one else is going to do it for you. Or sit on your hands and watch our hard won victory snatched away from us again.

We once had a widely popular medical marijuana program in MI (1979 to 1982) and then saw it stolen away by federal intransigence. Now the enemies of the people are launching their assault from within the very halls of our own state government. It is imperative that we stop these 3 bills now, stop them dead in their tracks, before they start to gain any traction whatsoever.

Getting a compassionate use law passed was the easy part. Now we need to defend it.
