Michael Phelps and Marijuana Legalization

Phelps resumed competition this weekend, prompting Jim Caple at ESPN to call for a debate on legalizing marijuana:

We need to hear all sides, as part of a serious discussion on this subject, and then make a rational decision about whether marijuana should be legal in this country.

What we do not need is to waste any more energy fretting over a college-age athlete smoking pot and the negative lesson it sends to the nation's youth. Otherwise the negative message kids will learn from Phelps' bong hit is this: Adults are too busy shouting about meaningless crap to intelligently discuss what is actually important.

Damn straight. I'm assuming, of course, that he's referring to those who condemned Phelps and not those of us who launched an angry boycott against Kellogg's. Because that was totally necessary.

Regarding Kellogg's; has their level of sales dropped? Hope so.

Kellogg didn't have a problem when Phelps drove drunk

and risked causing a catastrophe. But using marijuana? Bad, bad boy. Smack. I think you're the one who's been a bad boy, Kellogg's, and I don't eat your stinking pop-tarts no more. They're not healthy anyway, like most everything you sell, so thanks for motivating me to overcome my pop-tart addiction.

To hell with Kellog's.

To hell with Kellog's. Their stuff is crap anyway. Their corn flakes have got to be the most boring cereal ever. And everything else of theirs is even worse.

Phelps should in any case have gone with Wheaties, which are scrumptious and healthy and have a long record of sports figures endorsement. I still don't know why they didn't get Phelps to sign up for them. Dumb General Mills!

Phelps is a bit late in the game to be trying to stand up for marijuana; especially after failing to question the outrage of his being caught with a bong, and instead playing into his sponsors and going on an apology campaign like some recently released parolee traveling a school assembly circuit. Though I certainly agree a debate should be called, I believe Arnold Schwarzenegger's open, and somewhat prideful admittance to having smoked marijuana, coupled with his own call for a debate on his state's movement toward its legalization, is a much more honorable and noteworthy occasion.
