Amsterdam vs. Bill O'Reilly

O'Reilly said a couple pretty nasty things about the Dutch recently, prompting this delightful response from some genius on YouTube:

Now O'Reilly responds to the response, and check how he addresses the question of why rates of marijuana use are lower in the Netherlands than the U.S.:
Why have so many more people in the USA, where marijuana is illegal, tried it? 40% of people in the USA compared to 22.6%...

OREILLY (interrupting): The way they use statistics in the Netherlands is different, plus it's a much smaller country.
Huh? The guy just lies so reflexively, it's astonishing. Of course, by denying the validity of the statistics, he tacitly acknowledges that they would be significant if they were true. Well, they are true, Bill, which means all your paranoid fulminations about the horrors of legalization are nonsense.

I just hope he's right that the U.S. is on course to implement Dutch-style drug policies.

O'Reilly

I always knew he was a bigoted ass, but he's just proven that to millions of viewers who otherwise may have not been aware of that fact (or had ignored it because he was "on our side" -- a typical Republican/Democrat partisan way of thinking: "he's an ass but he's our ass"). He may have just become a liability to FOX. Boycott FOX, anyone? At least until they can his ass.

I'm pro-choice on EVERYTHING!

Aware of it or not

Most Faux News watchers don't care. He is the fountain of knowledge from which they drink. He is their penultimate oracle of wisdom and ignorance, and he's plumb out of wisdom.

It's funny how they claim to be for FREEDOM, yet insist on taking it away from others. Bet he goes home and has a nice long pull from a bottle of Scotch every night.

And somehow it's all supposed to be Fair and Balanced...

"it's a much smaller country"

I suspect O'Reilly knows perfectly well that the size of a country has nothing to do with per capita (for example, per million) statistics, but he also knows that much of his audience doesn't, and is happy to plant deliberately bad information in their minds for fun and profit. Just another day hard at work in demagogue's gold mine.

Bill O’Reilly Causes International Uproar by Insulting the Dutch

Netherlanders are unhappy with O’Reilly’s lies about Amsterdam and their country.  A piece on O’Reilly’s accusations is posted on Radio Netherlands Worldwide that identifies a 25-year-old former Amsterdam film student (Robert Nieuwenhuijs) as the producer of the YouTube segment.  The reader-posted comments are entertaining.

O’Reilly’s statement that the Dutch government is closing down coffee shops and brothels fails to mention that the Dutch government is currently occupied by the Christian Democratic Appeal Party (CDA) which sees Christianity and religion in general as an inspiration for its parliamentarians.

The religious inspiration in this case favors prohibiting soft drug use and limiting prostitution, abortion and euthanasia.  In that sense the CDA isn’t much different from the religious right and the Republicans in the United States, although the CDA is pro-environment.  Once the CDA loses its current political dominion, parliamentarian attempts to reinstate cannabis prohibition in the Netherlands should become less of a threat to the freedom-loving Dutch, as well as the freedom-loving drug tourists who contribute billions of euros to the Dutch economy each year.

Bill has really got it wrong

It is fantastic. They have absolutely no clue on what they are talking about. Statistics speak for themselves, and do not lie and give the real facts. Off course this must all be placed in the context on non liberal and conservative minds who are totally against any liberal political view. It is true that The Netherlands have “the image” of being a extreme liberal and tolerant country (which in fact is not so true anyhow) and especially Amsterdam is seen as the “Sodom and Gomorra” of drugs, sex and rock and roll.

The opposite is actually the real case. Our quite liberal, but controlled, drugs policy is a success and hard drugs related issues are almost gone, due to a tolerance and educational way of allowing soft drugs. Biggest criminal problem is here that the government is allowing sales of soft drugs to a certain amount, but so far has failed to legally structure the growth of soft drugs, allowing criminal activity in this part of the value chain. A mistake, which does give the government control over the whole chain, so quite shortsighted as normal politics.

And yes, there is a “Red Light” district in Amsterdam. Great, as paid sex is all over the world, we have just structured and controlled it in a certain part of Amsterdam, also with strict enforcement, banning out criminal activities and exploration of women.

So what is wrong? Having lived in the US myself, I have seen everything there as well. Drugs and sex, everywhere to get. Biggest issue is that it is not controlled and not structured and therefore a pool of criminal activities. So everything Bill claims to know, is actually based on his own country real facts. So, if he gets out of his conservative mindset and instead of “pointing the finger at others in a quite stupid and ignorant way” uses his influence in getting the US back into the real world and solving back home problems, he would do more good for his believes.

But…. Great barbies on his show, good to have sex with, smoking some pot as well ;-)
