Europe: Britain to Ban Spice, GBL, BZP

The British Home Office announced Tuesday that it is planning to ban several "legal highs," including "Spice," the club drug GBL, and the stimulant drug BZP. The substances will be added to the British list of controlled substances by year's end, said Home Secretary Alan Johnson.

"There is a perception that many of the so called 'legal highs' are harmless, however in some cases people can be ingesting dangerous industrial fluids or smoking chemicals that can be even more harmful than cannabis," said Johnson. "Legal highs are an emerging threat, particularly to young people, and we have a duty to educate them about the dangers."

"Spice" is a sort of synthetic cannabinoid which is currently sold legally as a spray to apply to herbal cigarettes. It has already been banned in France and Germany. It will become a Class B drug--in the middle tier of the British classification scheme--like amphetamines or marijuana.

GBL (Gamma-butyrolactone) and a similar chemical, which are converted in to the Class C drug GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate) in the body and often used as weekend party drugs, will become Class C drugs, the least serious drug classification. So will BZP (Benzylpiperazine) and related piperazines, which are stimulants taken as an alternative to amphetamine.

Under Britain's Misuse of Drugs Act of 1971, possession of Class C drugs can earn up to two years in prison, while possession of Class B drugs can earn up to five years. Dealing in either Class B or Class C drugs is punishable by up to 14 years in prison.

The Home Office has announced an education campaign around these newly classified substances. It is set to start at the beginning of the school year next month.

Politics & Advocacy Prohibition - Politics Outside US

Britain why don't you reduce your especially bad alcohol problem

by leveling the playing field between alcohol and cannabis? Alcohol kills and maims often, cannabis very rarely. Why isn't that all you really need to know?

Education should be focused on users

Education? More like informing kids about drugs they might otherwise never hear about.

A better idea would be to regulate the sale of these legal highs in such a way that first time users are made aware of the dangers. But that can only happen if you keep them legal.

"even more harmful than cannabis"

Really? Even more harmful than cannabis, aye? Got to say, that's pretty silly, like saying doughnuts are more dangerous than apples.

yeah, I had to roll my eyes at that one

Even more harmful than cannabis. Well, that isn't too hard to do. More dangerous than alcohol? Now that would be scary. But Britain's leaders are busy drinking that drug and hatching their hate filled schemes to oppress cannabis users. To the devil with these bigots
-newageblues

The British government is

The British government is evil. Only evil people will advertise drugs nobody has ever heard about and at the same time give criminals an extra source of income. Even a half-wit like myself can see that.

Why?!?

Im going to comment the generic "Legalise It" post!
Because it makes too much sence!
I have smoked legals like spice, skunk, dream etc.
And they do work well. But they are harmfull, you will notice after maybe 2 grams worth of smoke your chest normally feels a bit off and sometimes heavey wheezing in the morning. Now the cannabis I have smoked does what I like and if smoked without tabbaco which is actually killing me (but legal and heavily taxed) no ill effects are felt in comparison
If you were to watch the documentary "The Union, The business behind getting high" you will learn alot about this PLANT. It can cause mental problems, but much like alcohol (Legal and taxed).
If it was to be legailised it would how ever put alot of people out of work, dealers, growers middle men and runners AND ALOT of the police force.
This comment may not make any differance to the legality of this substance and I dont mind, people have the freedom to think for themselves but not control the way their minds think.
Have a look at the above documentary mentioned just for the facts (It does not however mention mental illness, which is the only down side to cannabis).
Thnaks guys

Pot does NOT cause mental illness

There is some evidence however, that those who have emotional, mental, or even medical/physical problems often self medicate with pot (and other drugs -- I knew a bipolar individual who used pot to mellow the highs and speed to offset the lows rather than take the "approved" pharmaceutical drug her doctor prescribed which, she said, made her feel as if she weren't real, like living in a fog). Any association between mental illness and the use of pot, you can pretty much figure the illness came before the pot use in almost all cases.

I'm pro-choice on EVERYTHING!

I kind of disagree

Pot can sometimes lead to mental problems. It isn't inherently bad for mental health, but it can often have a negative effect on it. I think, essentially, it makes you go into new territory mentally. Traveling to mental places that are too far away and doing it too often can catch up to some people's mental health. It's very much like other, more powerful, psychedelics (pot is not as powerful, obviously, but you can do it everyday for a long time). It isn't inherently harmful to travel, it's just that going into the unknown is unpredictable.

legal/illegal high

If it gets you high. Then its toxic to the body and mind. What will the British government do with people who use these drugs?
Throw them in prison! Where they can be introduced to harder drugs, cut with substances more harmful than the drug itself.
Then release them so the Tax payer can provide them, with the best methadone the National health service has to offer.
It is more likely, police forces will be instructed to issue a fine to anyone caught in possession.
This will help make sure the politicians have a bigger budget for their expenses, such as getting a new golf buggy or getting the swimming pool cleaned.
The only thing that makes these so called legal highs popular is they are easy to get and you won't get a criminal record. When they are
made illegal, in Britain. The demand for other drugs will increase and so will the use of alcohol. We all know the problems with that! I have my own mind, I don't need some politician to make something illegal before I know its not good for me.
Education is the key, if I knew the effect of smoking cannabis years ago. I may have never smoked, but I do!
People make their own choices and even knowing the danger of drugs, people will still use.
Would it not be better to decriminalize drug users and control the drugs market just like cigarettes and alcohol?
Its not just your typical stoner that smokes cannabis. Judges smoke it, lawyers smoke it, Doctors smoke it, Nurses smoke it and even Presidents smoked it. You just have to realize it. "LEGALIZE IT"!

The war on drugs is stupid

I honestly hope that the cases of illegal drugs, such as cannabis, ecstacy, coke fucking skyrocket, and that may well happen as people take legal highgs, not because they work better than illegal drugs - in most cases their effects are crap versions of illegal drugs. People use them because they aren't going to get caught

I hope the knobheads running the country really fuck up over this

I hope this country sinks

I hope this country sinks into the fucking ocean, I hate it. I hate my country. I love my countrymen, but it's too late for us. Just hold us under the water until we stop thrashing, please. We are the only ones who are rapidly speeding AWAY from reasonable drug policy. We can't be allowed to contaminate the discussion with our insanity any longer. Fill our lungs with sea water and push us under with a stick. It's all this fucking country deserves.

More harmful than cannabis

I agree it's not so hard to be "more harmful than cannabis." The fact that they're even comparing the dangers these drugs to marijuana makes me want to discredit them all together. Quit using pot as your go-to dirty word when these drugs might actually be harmful. http://www.newsy.com/videos/britain_bans_legal_highs

Just keep adding the letters

I remember when LSD was added to the list of illegal substances. There's been a whole lot of alphabet soup added since and as I see it things don't seem to have improved at all.The drug warriors are so deluded that they think something like marijuana is a problem. There are no legitimate reasons for drug prohibition of any kind as prohibition just removes any chance of proper education and a clear realization of what a drug really is.The drug war is the biggest failure of society to control the behavior of it's people through a legal system that has resulted in a disrespect for law and order and by making the police the enemy of the people. If you listened to the government propaganda you would think marijuana is a killer and would know nothing about heroin.People suffer from pain because doctors are afraid to prescribe pain medication. This is a world wide problem exported from the paranoia in Washington to the rest of us.That Britain seems to have caught the disease and suffers from a worse case than Amerika is both sad and pathetic.
